President promulgates ordinances for agriculture market reforms

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday promulgated the ordinances for major agricultural reforms which aim to give freedom to the farmers to sell their agriculture produce anywhere in the country and pave the way for contract farming. The Union Cabinet had on Wednesday cleared Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Ordinance 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance 2020 which were notified on Friday. Apart from these two key reforms, the amendment of essential goods act has also been given approval following which the agriculture commodities like onion, potatoes, oilseed, edible oil and cereals have been removed from the list of essential commodities. After the announcement of the landmark decisions by the Government for reforms in the agricultural sector for raising the income of the farmers as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the President has promulgated the two ordinances with the aim of giving a boost to rural India for farmers engaged in agriculture and allied activities, said the Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in a statement. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday wrote to all the Chief Ministers informing them of the Ordinances and solicited their cooperation in implementation of the reforms, said the statement. Johnson sets Oct 15 deadline for EU trade deal

London, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say that if no agreement on trade between the EU and UK can be reached by October 15 both sides should “accept that and move on”. Johnson will say completing the UK’s exit from the EU without a trade deal would still be a “good outcome”, the BBC reported. It comes after UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK is not “scared” of walking away. Another round of talks – the eighth – is due to begin on Tuesday. But on the eve of the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that the UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement made last year. The new bill would eliminate the legal force of arrangements over customs in Northern Ireland which had been designed to avoid a hard border with the Irish Republic. It would also override provisions on state aid – the financial assistance sometimes given by the government to companies. Government sources told the BBC that the legislation would be introduced this week, describing it as a “sensible fall-back option” in case negoiations break down. They said it was “not intended to derail the talks”, but a key EU diplomat told the BBC it was “a self-defeating strategy” that could lead to the trade talks unravelling altogether...

Serious diplomatic lapse in relationship with Nepal: Karan Singh

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Congress leader and former Maharaja of Kashmir, Karan Singh, has slammed the government for mishandling the India-Nepal ties over Nepal passing a resolution in its House of Representatives to adopt a new map which includes Indian territory. Karan Singh termed the fiasco as “Prima facie this appears to be a serious diplomatic lapse, the consequences of which are before us”. Karan Singh said that the matter was raised in November last year but “surprisingly it was not taken seriously, ideally the Nepal government should have been engaged through Foreign Secretary or Foreign Minister level, and if needed the Prime Minister should have pitched in to resolve the deadlock”. The Congress leader also criticised Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli for the “irreversible confrontational posture “with its relationship with India. Karan Singh said that he has been associated with Nepal politically and personally for several decades and he has deep regrets for what Prime Minister Oli has done with regards to ties with India. Nepal’s House of Representatives on June 13 unanimously adopted the Constitution Amendment Bill, paving the way for accommodating the updated political-administrative map in the national emblem which includes Indian areas of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura. Trinamool MLAs protest against Governor in Assembly

Kolkata, The stand-offs between West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Trinamool Congress continued to echo in the Assembly as the TMC legislators held protests in the premises decrying Raj Bhavan’s delay in clearing vital legislations. While the TMC lawmakers accused Dhankhar of holding back crucial Bills, the Governor dismissed the protests as ‘dirty politics’. The slogan-shouting MLAs gathered near the B.R. Ambedkar’s statue in the Assembly premises holding placards denouncing the Governor for stalling passage of key legislations, particularly the West Bengal State Commission for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Bill, 2019. They said important Bills could not be tabled in the House with Dhankhar refusing to give the nod. Meanwhile, the Governor sent a communication to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee under Article 338 and 338A of the Constitution arguing that the field (of the Bill) has been occupied by the National Commission for Scheduled Caste and National Commission for Schedule Tribe. In the six-page communication, Dhankhar said he always accorded the highest priority to legislative work, but the officials were yet to respond to certain questions he had raised about the Bill...
