New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday left for Saudi Arabia on a day’s official visit during which the two sides will ink an agreement to set up the Strategic Partnership Council to elevate the India-Saudi ties to a new level. Modi will also attend the Plenary Session of the Third Future Investment Initiative Forum being held in Riyadh on Tuesday. “PM @narendramodi emplanes for Riyadh to participate in the 3rd @FIIKSA Forum on an invitation of HM @KingSalman. Coupled with a strong bilateral component, the visit will strengthen a relationship that goes back centuries,” tweeted MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar. The PM, in a departure statement, said he is visiting the Kingdom at the invitation of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. Addressing the inaugural speech on the 95th annual plenary session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) via video conferencing, the Prime Minister said: “India is facing a lot of challenges — be it COVID-19 pandemic, locust swarms invasion, cyclone Amphan, mild tremors and recently the gas well explosion in Assam’s Tinsukia. Corona pandemic would be the turning point for all of us as India becomes self-reliant due to this crisis. Time has come to become self-reliant and we must turn this crisis into an opportunity.” Harping on the issue of speedily implementation of policies declared to make India self-reliant, he said that “Aatmanirbhar” (being self-reliant) lessons start at home and it is high time that India becomes ‘vocal for local’. Cyclone ‘Nisarga’: Storm activity intensifies in Arabian Sea

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. “Nisarga” currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa’s capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, ‘Nisarga’ will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. “The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone,” Vineet Kumar said...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) After the government has announced new Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for Kharif crops, Congress on Tuesday said that all hopes of farmers were dashed as they have been facing unprecedented crisis due to the lockdown, locust attack and cyclone. Congress leader Ahmed Patel said, “If this is going to be the government’s attitude towards farmers, their promise to double farm income by 2022 will end up becoming another ‘jumla’.” The Congress leader said that unfortunately, all hopes of farmers expecting much needed respite were dashed by the Centre. “Forget about profit, this so-called raise in Kharif MSPs won’t even cover their losses and debts”, he added The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday approved the increase in the MSPs for all mandated Kharif crops for marketing season 2020-21. Government has increased the MSPs of Kharif crops for marketing season 2020-21, to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce. The highest increase in MSPs is proposed for nigerseed (Rs 755 per quintal) followed by sesamum (Rs 370 per quintal), urad (Rs 300 per quintal) and cotton (long staple) (Rs 275 per quintal)...
