Islamabad, Ahead of a verdict in the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-b>i-b>Insaf (PTI), Pakistan’s ruling party has raised questions about impartiality of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd.) Sardar Muhammad Raza. Raza is likely to issue a verdict in the foreign funding case before his retirement on December 6. Prime Minister Imran Khan presided over the PTI’s core committee meeting on Sunday and reiterated the party’s demand that Election Commission hear cases of all three major political parties – PTI, Pakistan Muslim League-b>Nawaz (PML-b>N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), simultaneously and refrain from singling out PTI. “The ECP should follow rules, give equal opportunities to all the parties and conduct across-b>the-b>board accountability,” Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters after the core committee’s meeting. She wondered why applications by the PTI against the PML-b>N and PPP were not being entertained...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) With 17 per cent increase in taxes, including 6 per cent additional excise duty (AED), select liquors would cost more in Karnataka from Thursday, an official said on Wednesday. “The state Finance Department has increased tax on select liquors by 17 per cent, including 11 per cent excise duty and 6 per cent AED passed in the state budget for fiscal 2020-b>21 in March to mobilise more revenue,” Deputy Commissioner, Excise, J. Giri told IANS here. As liquor shops reopened on Monday after 40 days of extended lockdown and sales shot up due to huge demand, official sources said the state government does not anticipate fall in consumption, as the hike was modest compared to similar tax hikes in other states. As the hike applicable only on whisky, brandy, gin and rum, they will be costly by Rs 5 for a quarter (180 ml) from Thursday when shops open for business. With only 6 per cent AED, beer, wine, feni and toddy, their cost will go marginally. Demand for liquor remained high for the third consecutive day, as sales increased to Rs 231.6 crore on Wednesday, as customers bought 39 lakh litres of IML and 7 lakh litres of beer against sales of Rs 197 crore on Tuesday and Rs 45 crore on Monday...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) As part of its “Swachh Rail-b>Swachh Bharat” initiative, the Indian Railways has installed bio toilets across 68,000 coaches. “A total of 49,487 bio-b>toilets have been installed in 14,916 coaches during 2019-b>20. This takes the cumulative number of bio-b>toilets to more than 2,45,400 fitted in 68,800 coaches with a coverage of 100 per cent,” the Indian Railways said in a statement. This comes at a time when the country is dealing with an unprecedented health crisis caused by the deadly coronavirus, and the only cure to this fast spreading disease is “cleanliness” and “proper hygiene”. Integrated mechanised cleaning is also being provided at 953 railway stations pan India. More than 1,100 pairs of trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto and other important long distance mail/express trains, have been equipped with the facility of Onboard House Keeping Service (OBHS) for cleaning of coach toilets, doorways, aisles and passenger compartments during the run of the trains. The Railways also informed that the OBHS service is also supported by SMS-b>based on demand “Coach-b>Mitra” service to cover over 1060 pairs of trains. While cleanliness remains a key step, sustainable use of resources is equally important, and for this, comprehensive policy guidelines have been issued by the Indian Railways for installation of plastic bottle crushing machines (PBCMs) by the zonal railways. “At present, around 315 PBCMs have been installed at 229 stations including several district headquarters railway stations,” the statement said...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The price of diesel rose for the second straight day on Sunday, nearing Rs 82 per litre in the national capital. Petrol prices, however, were unchanged for the 27th consecutive day across the four metros. In Delhi, diesel was priced at Rs 81.94 a litre. With a 15-b>paise hike on Sunday, diesel is now Rs 1.51 costlier than petrol in the city. After the hike, Diesel prices in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata were Rs 80.11, Rs 78.86, Rs 77.04 respectively, higher than Rs 79.97, Rs 78.73 and Rs 76.91 a litre on Saturday. Unexpected rise in diesel prices despite slower demand has put the transport sector at a big disadvantage as rising fuel cost has further shrunk its margins. The price of diesel in the national capital has also made automobile companies concerned about the prospects of the sale of diesel-b>run cars in the country’s largest car market. Petrol prices, which were last hiked on June 29, again remained unchanged across the four metros. In Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, petrol was sold at an unchanged price of Rs 87.19, Rs 83.63, Rs 82.10 per litre respectively. Oil companies resumed the dynamic pricing system for daily revision of the two auto fuels from June 7 after keeping the price unchanged for around 82 days during the lockdown...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint New Delhi, (Samajweekly) As the economy reels under the pandemic and post lockdown woes, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das is of the view that extreme risk aversion by financial institutions will have adverse outcomes for all. Noting that India’s financial system remains sound, Das, in his foreword to the RBI’s latest Financial Stability Report, wrote that in the current environment, the need for financial intermediaries to proactively augment capital and improve their resilience has acquired top priority. “In the evolving milieu, while risk management has to be prudent, extreme risk aversion would have adverse outcomes for all,” he wrote. The Governor’s statement gains significance as concerns have been raised that banks are still risk averse and are largely shying away from lending in general, except for the sovereign guaranteed ECLGS loans for MSMEs. The Financial Stability Report for July 2020 also shows that bank credit, which had considerably weakened during the first half of 2019-b>20, slid down further in the subsequent period with the moderation becoming broad-b>based across bank groups. “Subdued bank credit shows clear signs of risk aversion,” the report said. The Governor also said that currently there is growing disconnect between the movements in certain segments of financial markets and real sector activity. The pandemic hit India in a period of growth moderation and the ensuing disruptions in demand conditions and supply chains have been aggravated by global spillovers, he added...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said, here on Thursday, around 100,000 jobs could be created in the agarbatti (incense stick) industry in the next 8-b>10 months after the Centre decided to increase import duty on bamboo sticks to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. It would strengthen the incense stick as well as the bamboo industries, said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena. The Finance Ministry recently increased import duty on bamboo sticks as part of the initiative taken by MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari aimed to discourage import and help local industry grow. Import of bamboo sticks from China and Vietnam had caused big employment losses. The rise in import duty will pave the way for new agarbatti manufacturing units to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The incense sticks’ domestic consumption is pegged at 1,490 tonnes a day. But only 760 tonnes a day is produced locally. The huge demand-b>supply gap led to large-b>scale import of raw incense sticks. “The import of raw incense sticks increased from just 2 per cent in 2009 to 80 per cent in 2019,” the KVIC said. In value terms, it increased from Rs 31 crore in 2009 to Rs 546 crore in 2019. The UPA government in 2011 had reduced import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. It hit the domestic Indian incense sticks manufacturers hard, causing closure of nearly 25 per cent units, the KVIC said. The KVIC claimed on its request the Commerce Ministry on August 31, 2019 placed the incense stick import under “restricted” category. While it revived hundreds of units in various states, like Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat and several N-b>E states, it also prompted traders to import round bamboo sticks. The import of bamboo sticks increased from Rs 210 crore in 2018-b>19 to Rs 370 crore in 2019-b>20...
