Don’t spit, chew tobacco in public places: Punjab minister

Chandigarh, (Samajweekly) Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Sunday appealed to the public not to spit or chew tobacco in public places as it spreads infectious diseases, including COVID-19 and tuberculosis. Now, there is a provision of a Rs 500 penalty for spitting in public places. Speaking on the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day, Sidhu said the state government has launched a statewide awareness campaign to highlight the deadly effect of smokeless tobacco use and motivate people to quit especially amidst the coronavirus outbreak. The evidence-based campaign includes the launch of a pre-tested public service announcement entitled “I Don’t Believe”, which focuses on the health harms that smokeless tobacco users are prone to, and are at a heightened risk for cancer compared to non-users. Nandita Murukutla, Vice President of the Global Policy and Research, Policy, Advocacy and Communication, Vital Strategies, said hard-hitting mass media campaigns are a powerful tool in tobacco control. “We commend the state’s health department on the timely launch of ‘I Don’t Believe’ and promoting the campaign widely across Punjab. By showing the deadly health harms of tobacco use, the campaign will encourage current smokeless tobacco users to quit.”..

Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu attended the cremation of Senior Medical Officer Arun Sharma and described him as the true corona warrior. Sharma was one of the brilliant and diligent officers of the Health Department. He was enthusiastically battling against the COVID-19 in the frontline since March and passionately performing his duty round the clock in the district hospital, the minister said. Sidhu said Sharma was a cardiac patient. He was put on a ventilator. Intensivist from the PGI Hospital in Chandigarh was guiding his clinical management and the state was preparing to airlift him either to the PGI or Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The victim doctor was survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. “Saddened to lose one of our hardworking corona warrior Dr Arun. It’s sad to lose such a brilliant and committed doctor. Punjab minister slams AAP move on use of oximeters

Chandigarh, (Samajweekly) Trashing the AAP announcement on use of oximeters in Punjab as a political gimmick, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Tuesday warned of the massive potential of community spread of COVID-19 due to repeat use of these oximeters by multiple persons without proper sanitisation. Slamming AAP’s political theatrics in Punjab villages, Sidhu warned the people that the party was misleading them completely, just as they had done in Delhi, where the COVID-19 situation was “critical” with all 11 districts of the national capital among the country’s 35 worst-affected districts. The use of the same oximeter by more than one person without sanitisation could lead to further spread of COVID-19, Sidhu pointed out, adding that AAP was promoting the oximeters as medicine or vaccine for COVID-19, while the fact was that it simply helps detect the oxygen level in a person’s body. Perhaps their strategy was to promote the further spread of the pandemic in Punjab in order to persuade people to believe it to be a failure of the state government, he warned. The “disinformation” campaign, which seemed to be deliberately spread by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to further their petty political interests in Punjab, was highly dangerous, the minister warned, adding that it could trigger a huge risk of infecting more people and perhaps even lead to a massive community spread in the rural areas. AAP’s strategy to spread misinformation in Punjab had been completely exposed, with at least one of their party activists arrested for making a false video on organ harvesting and testing, said Sidhu. Legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Senior passes away

Chandigarh, (Samajweekly) Legendary former hockey player Balbir Singh Senior died in a private hospital near here on Monday, his family said. He was 96 years old. His condition was critical for nearly a fortnight. He was undergoing treatment at Fortis Mohali and was in a “semi-comatose condition”. He was hospitalised on May 8 with high fever and breathing trouble. His COVID-19 test came negative. Balbir was part of the Indian teams that won gold at the 1948 London Olympics, Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956. His record for most individual goals scored in an Olympic men’s hockey final remains unbeaten. Balbir had set this record when he scored five goals in India’s 6-1 win over Netherlands in the gold medal match of the 1952 Games. He was the head coach of the Indian team for the 1975 men’s World Cup, which India won and the 1971 men’s World Cup, where India earned a bronze medal.
