MP govt under pressure to defy CAB, NRC

Bhopal, The Congress government in Madhya Pradesh is under pressure from its legislators to follow the example set by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to reject the Centre’s latest legislation on National Register of Citizens and Citizenship Amendment Act. One of the two Muslim MLAs of Congress, Arif Masood has asked the state government to follow in the footsteps of Banerjee who has rejected the NRC and CAB implementation in her state, or else he will resign as a lawmaker. Some other MLAs in MP and Chhattisgarh have also suggested that the government should resist the Centre on these laws. “I am going to tell my leader clearly that our government should emulate the courage shown by Mamta Banerjee by rejecting the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill,” MLA from Bhopal Central Masood said here. “If they (state government) accept these laws (NRC and CAB), I won’t remain a member of the state Assembly,” he said...

Thiruvananthapuram, (Samajweekly) The Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, who alleged that the fire that broke out in the state Secretariat on Tuesday was part of a larger conspiracy at the behest of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to destroy crucial evidences related to the gold smuggling case, met Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and sought a detailed probe into the matter. “We called on the Governor as he is the head of the state to brief him about the grave conspiracy that has taken place as crucial files have been destroyed. This particular office was closed because a few of the staff had tested Covid positive. How can an office that’s closed catch fire? Vijayan is cornered because probe agencies are knocking on his doors and hence documents are being destroyed. Tomorrow we will submit a detailed letter with him,” said Chennithala. The Kerala government, meanwhile, has asked Additional Director General of police Manoj Abraham to conduct a probe into the matter. On Tuesday night, youth activists of the Congress and the BJP were seen engaged in angry exchanges with the police, who later used water cannons to disburse them from in front of the Secretariat. Victim’s last call helped police crack gang-rape, murder case

Hyderabad, The last phone call made by the woman veterinarian, who was gang-raped and murdered near the Outer Ring Road on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Wednesday night, helped the police crack the case. According to the police, Mohammed Arif, the truck driver and the main accused, had given her his mobile number to gain her confidence before committing the crime along with another driver and two cleaners. When the victim returned to Tondupally toll gate on Outer Ring Road at around 9 p.m. to collect her parked scooty, Arif came to her and said that her vehicle was punctured. He offered to help her by sending the two-wheeler through his cleaner to the repair shop. The victim was reluctant but Arif gave her his mobile number to gain her confidence. When the cleaner did not return with the bike after 15 minutes and Arif was also not around, she called him. When the accused returned, they caught hold of her and committed the crime. Analysis of the victim’s call data led the investigators to Arif. Subsequently, three other accused were also arrested. The police revealed that the perpetrators of the horrendous crime raped the victim one by one between 9.30 p.m. and 10.20 p.m...

Pak presidency budget slashed significantly

Islamabad, (Samajweekly) The overall budget of Pakistan’s presidency has been cut by more than 60 per cent for 2020-21, according to the budget document. The total budget of the President House was 992 million PKR for the outgoing fiscal year but President Arif Alvi has reduced it by 597 million, or 60.18 per cent and the reduction has been shown in his personal expenditures along with cuts in allowances of the human resources, Dawn news reported on Saturday. The budget book 2020-21 shows that regular allowance and other allowances of staff and officers posted in the President secretariat is 193.22 PKR for the upcoming fiscal year, as compared to 458.74 million spent under the same head in the outgoing fiscal year. Similarly, a major cut has been made in the operating expenditures of the presidency to 53.38 million PKR, which was 180.44 million in the fiscal 2019-20. It seems that President Alvi was not taking any salary, which was 10.75 million PKR in 2019-20 but there was no mention of it in the budget book. On Friday, the Pakistan government unveiled its budget for the fiscal 2020-21 amid an economic slowdown and challenges triggered by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Hammad Azhar, presented the budget of 7,294.9 billion PKR ($44 billion) for the upcoming fiscal year starting from July 2020 to June 2021 at the lower house of Parliament after approval by the cabinet. ..

The career diplomat from Pakistan, Zakaria had an early stint as Deputy High Commissioner here, and has considerable clout in the British political and legal circles.
