Karnataka records 515 Covid cases in a day’s span

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) Karnataka registered a record 515 Covid cases, the highest single day number so far, following 473 domestic returnees from Maharashtra testing positive, an official said on Friday. The new case take the state’s tally to 4,835. “New cases reported from Thursday 5 p.m. to Friday 5 p.m., 515,” said a health official. On Friday, cases spiked in Udupi, Kalaburagi, Bengaluru Urban, Yadgir, Mandya, Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Bengaluru Rural. Udupi saw a record 204 cases in the past 24 hours, followed by Yadgir (74), Vijayapura (53), Kalaburagi (42), Bidar (39), Belagavi (36), Mandya (13), Bengaluru Rural (12), Bengaluru Urban (10), Dakshaina Kannada (8), Uttara Kannada (7), Hassan, Dharwad and Chikkaballapura (3 each), Haveri and Ramanagara (2 each) and Davangere, Bagalkote, Ballari and Kolar (1 each). Raichur did not record a case and Hassan only three. Of the new cases, 363 were men and 152 were women. On a positive note, 83 people got discharged in the past 24 hours. KVIC expects 100,000 new jobs in the agarbatti industry

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said, here on Thursday, around 100,000 jobs could be created in the agarbatti (incense stick) industry in the next 8-10 months after the Centre decided to increase import duty on bamboo sticks to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. It would strengthen the incense stick as well as the bamboo industries, said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena. The Finance Ministry recently increased import duty on bamboo sticks as part of the initiative taken by MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari aimed to discourage import and help local industry grow. Import of bamboo sticks from China and Vietnam had caused big employment losses. The rise in import duty will pave the way for new agarbatti manufacturing units to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The incense sticks’ domestic consumption is pegged at 1,490 tonnes a day. But only 760 tonnes a day is produced locally. The huge demand-supply gap led to large-scale import of raw incense sticks. “The import of raw incense sticks increased from just 2 per cent in 2009 to 80 per cent in 2019,” the KVIC said. In value terms, it increased from Rs 31 crore in 2009 to Rs 546 crore in 2019. The UPA government in 2011 had reduced import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. It hit the domestic Indian incense sticks manufacturers hard, causing closure of nearly 25 per cent units, the KVIC said. The KVIC claimed on its request the Commerce Ministry on August 31, 2019 placed the incense stick import under “restricted” category. While it revived hundreds of units in various states, like Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat and several N-E states, it also prompted traders to import round bamboo sticks. The import of bamboo sticks increased from Rs 210 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 370 crore in 2019-20...

Defence infra of PSUs, OFB to be modernised: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched modernization and upgradation of defence public sector undertakings and Ordnance Factory Board infrastructure on Monday as part of Atma Nirbhar Bharat (self reliant India) initiative. Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a clarion call for Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan and his 5-I formula of Intent, Inclusion, Investment, Infrastructure and Innovation will put the economy on a high growth trajectory. He said,”Our government has made timely and thoughtful interventions during Covid-19 times like issuing negative list for import, increase in FDI limits, separate budget for domestic capital procurement and emphasis on indigenization.” The minister added that the ban on imports of 101 defence items is a big step towards an Atma Nirbhar Bharat. This list of negative items contains not only small items but weapon systems of high and critical technology. More such items will be added to this list shortly which will save crores of rupees in imports.” Singh said that the government will take more steps towards indigenisation and investment in defence infrastructure and expansion in defence manufacturing capability. “These steps will create big opportunities for the Indian defence industry,” he said. Rajnath Singh said, “Defence industry has always been the forerunner of cutting-edge technologies world across and hence self-reliance in Defence is a tall task which needs whole hearted involvement of all to be fruitful.” He added, “The defence industries have been the force behind the Armed Forces. Today we are proud of our Defence PSUs and OFB for their continued support and sustained efforts towards this.”..
