President promulgates ordinances for agriculture market reforms

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday promulgated the ordinances for major agricultural reforms which aim to give freedom to the farmers to sell their agriculture produce anywhere in the country and pave the way for contract farming. The Union Cabinet had on Wednesday cleared Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Ordinance 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance 2020 which were notified on Friday. Apart from these two key reforms, the amendment of essential goods act has also been given approval following which the agriculture commodities like onion, potatoes, oilseed, edible oil and cereals have been removed from the list of essential commodities. After the announcement of the landmark decisions by the Government for reforms in the agricultural sector for raising the income of the farmers as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the President has promulgated the two ordinances with the aim of giving a boost to rural India for farmers engaged in agriculture and allied activities, said the Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in a statement. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday wrote to all the Chief Ministers informing them of the Ordinances and solicited their cooperation in implementation of the reforms, said the statement. Indian Railways has installed bio toilets across 68,000 coaches

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) As part of its “Swachh Rail-Swachh Bharat” initiative, the Indian Railways has installed bio toilets across 68,000 coaches. “A total of 49,487 bio-toilets have been installed in 14,916 coaches during 2019-20. This takes the cumulative number of bio-toilets to more than 2,45,400 fitted in 68,800 coaches with a coverage of 100 per cent,” the Indian Railways said in a statement. This comes at a time when the country is dealing with an unprecedented health crisis caused by the deadly coronavirus, and the only cure to this fast spreading disease is “cleanliness” and “proper hygiene”. Integrated mechanised cleaning is also being provided at 953 railway stations pan India. More than 1,100 pairs of trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto and other important long distance mail/express trains, have been equipped with the facility of Onboard House Keeping Service (OBHS) for cleaning of coach toilets, doorways, aisles and passenger compartments during the run of the trains. The Railways also informed that the OBHS service is also supported by SMS-based on demand “Coach-Mitra” service to cover over 1060 pairs of trains. While cleanliness remains a key step, sustainable use of resources is equally important, and for this, comprehensive policy guidelines have been issued by the Indian Railways for installation of plastic bottle crushing machines (PBCMs) by the zonal railways. “At present, around 315 PBCMs have been installed at 229 stations including several district headquarters railway stations,” the statement said...

As woman guard faints at event, President goes to enquire

New Delhi, President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday stepped down from the stage to enquire from a woman security guard about her condition after she fainted at a event he was attending. The President was attending the first National Corporate Social Responsibility Awards when the incident took place. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her deputy Anurag Thakur, who were also attending the programme, accompanied Kovind as he came down from the stage. Panaji, (Samajweekly) Chinese products should be boycotted and banned in Goa, state BJP chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade said on Tuesday, urging people to buy and endorse India-made products only to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. Addressing a press conference here at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state headquarters, Tanavade also said, that China was indulging in ‘masti’, but the Prime Minister has handled the situation adequately. When asked if the BJP-led government in Goa should take cue and also wean off dependence on foreign, especially Chinese made articles and products, Tanavade said: “Such things cannot be done overnight, but we will succeed in the long run”. The state BJP chief also said that party workers and officials had been directed henceforth to address the media wearing India-made ‘swadeshi’ clothes only. Accusing China of unnecessary provocation, Tanavade said, that anger against India’s eastern neighbour had even irked young children in the country. “Even children in India are angry with China over Covid. Defence infra of PSUs, OFB to be modernised: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched modernization and upgradation of defence public sector undertakings and Ordnance Factory Board infrastructure on Monday as part of Atma Nirbhar Bharat (self reliant India) initiative. Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a clarion call for Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan and his 5-I formula of Intent, Inclusion, Investment, Infrastructure and Innovation will put the economy on a high growth trajectory. He said,”Our government has made timely and thoughtful interventions during Covid-19 times like issuing negative list for import, increase in FDI limits, separate budget for domestic capital procurement and emphasis on indigenization.” The minister added that the ban on imports of 101 defence items is a big step towards an Atma Nirbhar Bharat. This list of negative items contains not only small items but weapon systems of high and critical technology. More such items will be added to this list shortly which will save crores of rupees in imports.” Singh said that the government will take more steps towards indigenisation and investment in defence infrastructure and expansion in defence manufacturing capability. “These steps will create big opportunities for the Indian defence industry,” he said. Rajnath Singh said, “Defence industry has always been the forerunner of cutting-edge technologies world across and hence self-reliance in Defence is a tall task which needs whole hearted involvement of all to be fruitful.” He added, “The defence industries have been the force behind the Armed Forces. Today we are proud of our Defence PSUs and OFB for their continued support and sustained efforts towards this.”..
