Three persons were arrested for raising anti-Javadekar slogans, while the Opposition workers staged a demonstration with placards saying, ‘Go Back Javadekar’, who also holds the Information and Broadcasting portfolio, outside the venue screening films for the 50th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The protests were organised after Javadekar last week turned down the Goa government’s request for withdrawal of the MoEF letter, issued last month giving the Karnataka government go-ahead for the Rs 841 crore Kalasa-Banduri project...

Republican National Convention to begin on Monday

Washington, (Samajweekly) The 2020 Republican National Convention (RNC) is set to begin on Monday, during which President Donald Trump will formally accept the party’s presidential nomination for the November 3 election. The four-day convention, which will run till Thursday, has been largely scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic, reports Xinhua news agency. Trump had planned to move his acceptance speech to Jacksonville, Florida but he later called it off after infections surged in “The Sunshine State”. His speech will now take place on the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday night despite criticism that the federal property should not be used as the backdrop for a campaign event. On the inaugural day of the RNC, convention proceedings in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday will be attended by six delegates from each state and territory, amounting to 336 delegates in total, who will nominate Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for a second term. Trump will make a stop in Charlotte on Monday just as delegates plan to hold roll call nomination. On Sunday, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said that she doesn’t believe the presence of the convention attendees in Charlotte will pose public health risks. “We tested everybody before they came to Charlotte, we tested everybody onsite,” McDaniel told CBS News. “We are doing things that allow people to live their lives, have a convention.”..

I am appalled to read about the actions of a few unelected, self-appointed Sikhs who have removed Shri Granth Sahib’s Sarup (Holy Book) from the house of the former Principal of Khalsa College in Amritsar by claiming that he cooks and eats eggs at home. It appears these people have claimed ownership upon the Sikh faith to decide how people must respect the holy book. Are they going to ban all those who eat meat, fish, chicken and eggs and also drink alcohol from entering the Gurdwaras? If they do, then most of the Gurdwara will be deserted, and without the donations, it will be impossible for the Gurdwaras to remain open for much longer. According to the Sikh faith, there is no restriction against entering Gurdwaras after eating meat or eggs as the body is the flesh itself. There are passages against meat, in the Adi Granth. Guru Gobind Singh, however, permits the Khalsa the use of Jahtka whereby an animal is killed with one blow. These fanatics misrepresent the teachings of our Gurus and interpret them according to their limited vision and common sense. Most of the Sikhs in the Indian Armed Forces eat eggs, meat and enjoy drinks and still carry Sikh holy scripture with them and even to the battlefields. What about the Nihang Singhs who enjoy a drink made out of Bhang (Leaves and flower tops of cannabis)? Hazur Sahib and other Gurdwaras of the Deccani Sikhs sacrifice a goat and serve meat as Parshad. It is a custom of warriors of India to put the Tilak of blood to their weaponry on the occasion of Dushehra and Holi...

The WHO chief stressed that funding quality health for all doesn’t just save live, it can also mean that children are healthy and can go to school, people can go to work to earn a living and societies and economies are both stronger and more sustainable. “Over the past few months, across the world, we have shown that when countries implement a comprehensive strategy they can effectively contain and suppress the spread of the virus, while minimizing the impact on lives and livelihoods,” said Tedros. “I am looking forward to greeting and working with leaders from across the world to ensure that together we optimise the COVID-19 response and build back stronger health systems,” he added.
