Ottawa, (Samajweekly) There have been 131,495 cases of COVID-19 in Canada, including 9,143 deaths, with the trend of increased cases among younger people, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said. In terms of age, the trend of increased disease activity among younger individuals has continued for many weeks, with people under 40 years of age accounting for over 62 per cent of cases, said PHAC in a statement on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported. Among these, males and females aged 20 to 29 years continue to have the highest incidence rates, with 10.7 and 11.4 cases reported per 100,000 people, respectively. Incidence rates for males and females aged 30 to 39 years of age are next highest with 8.4 and 8.0 cases reported per 100,000 people. The coronavirus outbreak settings included food, drink and retail venues that tend to draw in this younger age demographic. PHAC also said labs across Canada tested an average of almost 46,000 people daily over the past week, with 0.9 per cent testing positive. Early Sunday, Ontario province confirmed 158 new cases of COVID-19, with the majority of infections reported within the Greater Toronto Area, according to CTV. Out of the 158 new cases, 79 are within the age group between 20 and 39, with 29 under the age of 20; 30 between 40 and 59 years old; and 12 between 60 and 79 years old. There are only eight over the age of 80...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint London, (Samajweekly) UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that it was “vitally important” for children to return to classrooms, with the life chances of a generation at stake, it was reported on Monday. Separate guidance for reopening schools has been published for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the BBC reported. In Scotland, schools have already reopened, while some students in Northern Ireland will return to school on Monday. In England and Wales, in-person classes are set to begin in September. In a statement released on Sunday evening, Johnson thanked school staff for spending the summer “making classrooms Covid-secure”. “I have previously spoken about the moral duty to reopen schools to all pupils safely,” he said. “We have always been guided by our scientific and medical experts, and we now know far more about coronavirus than we did earlier this year.” Echoing England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty remarks, Johnson said that “the risk of contracting Covid-19 in school is very small and it is far more damaging for a child’s development and their health and wellbeing to be away from school any longer”. “This is why it’s vitally important that we get our children back into the classroom to learn and to be with their friends. “Nothing will have a greater effect on the life chances of our children than returning to school,” the BBC quoted Johnson as saying in the statement...

Washington,(Samajweekly) President Donald Trump has refused to condemn Russia over the poisoning of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, saying he has not seen proof. He said the case was “tragic” but urged reporters to focus instead on China, which he said was a bigger threat to the world than Russia, the BBC reported on Saturday. Nato and Germany say there is “proof beyond doubt” that Navalny was attacked with a Novichok nerve agent. His team said he was poisoned on the Kremlin’s orders. Russia denies this. On Saturday, the Russian foreign ministry suggested that if a Novichok-type nerve agent had indeed been used, it did not necessarily originate in Russia. Navalny – an anti-corruption campaigner who has long been the most prominent face of opposition to President Vladimir Putin in Russia – is in a coma in a Berlin hospital having been airlifted there from Siberia, where he fell ill. Speaking at a press event on Friday, he said he had yet to see evidence of poisoning in the case. “So I don’t know exactly what happened. I think it’s tragic, it’s terrible, it shouldn’t happen. We haven’t had any proof yet but I will take a look,” he said. He also stopped short of criticising Mr Putin and said Beijing posed a greater threat...
