Danve urges Mamata to implement Consumer Protection Act

New Delhi/Kolkata, (Samajweekly) Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution, Raosaheb Patil Danve, has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to facilitate the implementation of the Consumer Protection Act in the state. Danve said on Sunday that the Consumer Protection Act 2019 would be a vital tool in protecting consumer rights, as it provides for simplifying the consumer dispute adjudication process. He was speaking in a webinar organised by the Press Information Bureau, Kolkata. Danve said that with the passage of the Consumer Protection Act in the Indian Parliament and a notification by the Central government, the Act has come into force from July 20. Now it is the collective responsibility of the Centre and the state to ensure that the Act is enforced in an appropriate manner, he said. Danve urged the West Bengal government and its Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to facilitate the implementation of the Act in the state. Speaking on the occasion, G.C. Rout, an official of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, said that advantages are multi-dimensional for the stakeholders in the value chain with emphasis on the consumers. Snowden’s residence permit in Russia automatically extended

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Moscow, (Samajweekly) The residence permit of Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked classified documents on US surveillance programmes in 2013 and has been living in Russia, was automatically extended until July 15 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the countrys measures to curb the infection, a law enforcement source said. Snowden’s residence permit expired on April 30. He submitted all documents for its extension in mid-March, TASS News Agency reported on Saturday. In late March, the Russian Interior Ministry decided to automatically extend residence permits for all holders. “Due to anti-coronavirus measures, Snowden, just like all other residence permit holders, had this document automatically extended until June 15. Therefore, his residence permit remains valid. Later, a decision will be made about whether it should be extended by three more years upon Snowden’s request and in line with the current legislation,” the source told TASS News Agency. Meanwhile, Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told TASS that his client stays in home and observes the self-isolation regime. “There is nothing we can say as long as self-isolation remains in place. We are all staying home,” he said. In 2013, Snowden leaked information on the methods of electronic surveillance by US intelligence services, including illegally wiretapping foreign leaders. President promulgates ordinances for agriculture market reforms

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday promulgated the ordinances for major agricultural reforms which aim to give freedom to the farmers to sell their agriculture produce anywhere in the country and pave the way for contract farming. The Union Cabinet had on Wednesday cleared Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Ordinance 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance 2020 which were notified on Friday. Apart from these two key reforms, the amendment of essential goods act has also been given approval following which the agriculture commodities like onion, potatoes, oilseed, edible oil and cereals have been removed from the list of essential commodities. After the announcement of the landmark decisions by the Government for reforms in the agricultural sector for raising the income of the farmers as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the President has promulgated the two ordinances with the aim of giving a boost to rural India for farmers engaged in agriculture and allied activities, said the Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in a statement. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday wrote to all the Chief Ministers informing them of the Ordinances and solicited their cooperation in implementation of the reforms, said the statement. Yes Bank posts staggering Q3 standalone net loss of Rs 18,560 cr

Mumbai, Financially troubled Yes Bank on Saturday reported a standalone net loss of Rs 18,560.31 crore for the third quarter of the financial year 2019-20. This is amongst the biggest losses reported by the India Inc. At present, the private lender is under a moratorium and is controlled by the office of the administrator appointed by the RBI. The bank had reported a net profit of Rs 1,001.85 crore during the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Besides, the bank’s total income fell to Rs 6,268.50 crore from Rs 8,849.81 crore earned during the October-December quarter of the previous fiscal. On consolidated basis, Yes Bank reported a net loss of Rs 18,564.24 crore for the December quarter from a net profit of Rs 1,000.57 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. The independent auditor’s review report on the consolidated results pointed out that there is a “material uncertainty related to going concern” of the bank. “The said assumption of going concern is dependent upon the degree of success of the final reconstruction scheme, the quantum of capital infused into the bank and the bank’s ability to stabalise its deposit balances post withdrawal of the moratorium by the RBI. Our conclusion is not modified in respect of this matter,” the auditor said...
