Snowden’s residence permit in Russia automatically extended

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Moscow, (Samajweekly) The residence permit of Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked classified documents on US surveillance programmes in 2013 and has been living in Russia, was automatically extended until July 15 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the countrys measures to curb the infection, a law enforcement source said. Snowden’s residence permit expired on April 30. He submitted all documents for its extension in mid-March, TASS News Agency reported on Saturday. In late March, the Russian Interior Ministry decided to automatically extend residence permits for all holders. “Due to anti-coronavirus measures, Snowden, just like all other residence permit holders, had this document automatically extended until June 15. Therefore, his residence permit remains valid. Later, a decision will be made about whether it should be extended by three more years upon Snowden’s request and in line with the current legislation,” the source told TASS News Agency. Meanwhile, Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told TASS that his client stays in home and observes the self-isolation regime. “There is nothing we can say as long as self-isolation remains in place. We are all staying home,” he said. In 2013, Snowden leaked information on the methods of electronic surveillance by US intelligence services, including illegally wiretapping foreign leaders. Berlin, (Samajweekly) German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not attend the G7 summit in Washington due to the coronavirus pandemic, state media reported Saturday, citing government spokesperson Steffen Seibert. US President Donald Trump said on May 20 that he was aiming for a real G7 summit in Washington in late June as a sign of normalization, reports Xinhua news agency. The summit was originally scheduled for June 10-12 at the presidential retreat of Camp David, Maryland. In March, however, the US government cancelled the arrangement because of the pandemic and scheduled a video conference instead. Merkel had initially left open whether she would accept Trump’s invitation to participate in a video conference. In whatever form this meeting takes place, “whether as a video conference or otherwise, I will definitely fight for multilateralism. WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) With 17 per cent increase in taxes, including 6 per cent additional excise duty (AED), select liquors would cost more in Karnataka from Thursday, an official said on Wednesday. “The state Finance Department has increased tax on select liquors by 17 per cent, including 11 per cent excise duty and 6 per cent AED passed in the state budget for fiscal 2020-21 in March to mobilise more revenue,” Deputy Commissioner, Excise, J. Giri told IANS here. As liquor shops reopened on Monday after 40 days of extended lockdown and sales shot up due to huge demand, official sources said the state government does not anticipate fall in consumption, as the hike was modest compared to similar tax hikes in other states. As the hike applicable only on whisky, brandy, gin and rum, they will be costly by Rs 5 for a quarter (180 ml) from Thursday when shops open for business. With only 6 per cent AED, beer, wine, feni and toddy, their cost will go marginally. Demand for liquor remained high for the third consecutive day, as sales increased to Rs 231.6 crore on Wednesday, as customers bought 39 lakh litres of IML and 7 lakh litres of beer against sales of Rs 197 crore on Tuesday and Rs 45 crore on Monday...
