No proposal to shift state capital: Andhra minister

Amaravati, Clearing the air over the future of Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh, the YSR Congress Party government said on Friday that there is no proposal to shift the capital. Minister for Municipal Administration Botsa Satyanarayana submitted a written reply to this effect in the state legislative council. Satyanarayana, who himself made certain statements in the past raising a question mark on the future of Amaravati as the state capital, told a member of opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) that the government has no proposal to shift the capital. Ever since the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) came to power in May, there have been indications that the government may shift the capital out of Amaravati. After Y.S. Visakhapatnam, Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan here on Sunday gave two-week ultimatum to Andhra Pradesh government to address the distress among construction workers due to sand shortage. The Jana Sena chief, who led a march on the issue, asked the government to pay Rs 50,000 each to workers not getting work and Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of those who committed suicide. Claiming that 36 workers have ended their lives due to the construction sector crisis, Kalyan said if the government failed to respond he would take the protest to state capital Amaravati. The government’s failures had pushed around 30 lakh workers into crisis, he added. The march, supported by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), drew huge response. It was the first show of strength by Kalyan since the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) stormed to power in May with 151 seats in 175-member Assembly. The Jana Sena could win only one seat. Kalyan lost both the seats he contested. Slamming the YSRCP for wrong policies, he said it should ponder why people had started protesting within six months of its coming to power. Andhra to give Rs 15,000 for last rites of Covid victims

Amaravati, (Samajweekly) The Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday announced financial aid of Rs 15,000 each for the last rites of those who die of Covid-19. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy directed officials to implement the scheme immediately. The announcement came amid growing number of Covid-19 fatalities in the state. As many as 99 deaths and 5,784 positive cases were reported during last three days. At a review meeting held at his official residence, the Chief Minister discussed further measures to be taken to contain the disease and directed state health officials to come up with a plan of action with regards to Covid service centres in the state. On the quality of the services to the people in different districts, he asked the officials to mainly focus on quality in Covid care centres, hospitals and quarantine centres. He also directed them to ensure quality meals and sanitation in the respective Covid centre. The Chief Minister also instructed the officials to come up with a feedback number at Covid centres to receive suggestions. He also asked them to make Covid examination centres permanent. The officials briefed the Chief Minister on the special buses, which will be used in the containment areas for further testing...

Jagan Mohan Reddy to expand Cabinet on Wednesday

Amaravati, (Samajweekly) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will expand his Cabinet on Wednesday by filling up two vacancies created by the resignation of two ministers. The two vacancies have arisen with the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Pilli Subhas Chandra Bose and minister Mopidevi Venkataramana following their election to the Rajya Sabha recently. Their resignations from the Cabinet were accepted by the Governor on Monday. Both Subhas Chandra Bose and Venkatramna were members of the Legislative Council and Jagan Mohan Reddy decided to send them to the Rajya Sabha after the Assembly passed a resolution urging the Centre to abolish the Upper House of the state legislature. C. Venugopal and Seedari Appalaraju are likely to be inducted into the Cabinet. Venugopal, a member of Assembly from Ramachandrapuram in East Godavari district, belongs to the same Setti Balija community represented by Subhas Chandra Bose. Appalaraju represents the Palasa constituency in Srikakulam district and belongs to the fishermen’s community like Venkatramna. The Chief Minister is also likely to elevate Roads and Buildings Minister Dharmana Krishnadas as the Deputy Chief Minister in place of Subhash Chandra Bose. He may also go for some changes in the portfolios of the ministers based on their performance during the last one year. Andhra CM meets Modi, reiterates special category demand

New Delhi/Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and reiterated the demand for Special Category Status (SCS) to the state in the light of the observation made by the 15th Finance Commission. The chief minister brought to Modi’s notice that the 15th Finance Commission made it clear that according special status to the state is in the purview of the Centre. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president said that the state needs special status to overcome the financial constraints. Jagan, as the chief minister is popularly known, sought early release of pending funds to the state including the funds for Polavaram project. As this was Jagan’s first meeting with Modi after the state government decided to develop three state capitals, the chief minister explained the rationale behind the move. Jagan informed the Prime Minister that the state Cabinet has approved to have the executive capital in Visakhapatnam, the legislative capital in Amaravati and the judicial capital in Kurnool for which a Bill was passed by the state Assembly.
