Rajnath to inaugurate bridge on all-weather road to LAC post

New Delhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will next week inaugurate a bridge in northern Ladakh that will ease movement of troops to the border sector of Daulat Beg Oldi, where a 21-day military standoff between India and China had taken place in 2013, sources in the Defence Ministry said here on Thursday. The bridge is located across the Shyok River, a tributary of the Indus, and falls on the fag end of the road connecting Leh, the principal town of Ladakh, with Karakoram Pass on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China. An all-weather road linking Leh with Karakoram Pass, through Tangtse and Chang La Pass, had been completed earlier this year. As per sources, nearly three dozen bridges have been built across snow-fed rivers and streams that fall along this road. Defence officials said Rajnath Singh is scheduled to travel to Leh on October 21 for inauguration of the Shyok bridge. “The alignment of the Leh-Karakoram road was very much there earlier. But other means had to be used for transportation, that is, by helicopters or long-range patrols. Now it will be easier for India to induct, maintain and launch operations from the area,” a retired Army commander told IANS on the condition of anonymity. Troops of the People’s Republic Army (PLA) of China had entered almost 19 kms into Indian territory in April 2013 and set up tents in Raki Nala, near the Daulat Beg Oldi sector. New Delhi/Beijing, (Samajweekly) A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned China against aggression, Beijing asked New Delhi not to “misjudge” the situation or “underestimate” its will. China even went a step further alleging India of breaking consensus and “deliberately provoking”. Even as China’s President Xi Jinping has remained tight-lipped about the escalation of tensions between India and China, especially after the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in a violent stand-off between the two sides at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, Beijing’s spokesperson took to social media to respond to India’s warning. In a couple of tweets, Foreign Ministry spokesperson of China, Hua Chunying said, “India must not misjudge the current situation or underestimate China’s firm will to safeguard its territorial sovereignty.” China has been laying claim over Galwan valley in the union territory of Ladakh. Hua also repeated that “Indian front-line broke the consensus and crossed the Line of Actual Control, deliberately provoking and attacking Chinese officers and soldiers, thus triggering fierce physical conflicts and causing casualties”. The statement on Twitter came while Indian and Chinese militaries are holding talks about the confrontation in Ladakh. India’s Foreign Minister S. New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The government on Saturday called China’s claim over Ladakhs Galwan Valley unacceptable and clarified that the violent faceoff, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed, had taken place due to the intrusion of Chinese troops into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The statement came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an all-party meeting said that there are no intrusions into the Indian territory in Ladakh, and not a single Indian border post is overrun, triggering confusion about the violent clashes that led to the killing of 20 Indian Army soldiers in Galwan Valley on Monday night. After Prime Minister’s ambiguous statement, China on Saturday morning claimed its sovereignty over the entire Galwan Valley. In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the government has now said that China’s claims over Galwan Valley are unacceptable. Reiterating that the position with regard to the Galwan Valley area has been historically clear, official spokesperson of the MEA, Anurag Srivastava, said the “attempts by the Chinese side to now advance exaggerated and untenable claims with regard to the LAC there are not acceptable.” Beijing’s latest claims, the government said, “are not in accordance with China’s own position in the past.” Giving a point-by-point rebuttal to China’s claims about the sequence of events that led to massive violence at the LAC, the spokesperson said that since early May 2020, the Chinese side has been hindering India’s normal, traditional patrolling pattern in the area. “This had resulted in a faceoff which was addressed by the ground commanders as per the provisions of the bilateral agreements and protocols.
