Aus state extends Covid-19 lockdown for 2 more weeks

Melbourne, (Samajweekly) Australia’s Victoria state, the worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has extended a strict Covid-19 lockdown by another two weeks, as infection numbers had not fallen enough to ease restrictions. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that stage 4 restrictions would remain in place until September 28, with only a slight easing until October, reports Xinhua news agency. Andrews said that despite the impact of the lockdowns on Victoria and the state’s economy, modelling had clearly shown that to reopen prematurely would lead to a rapid increase in case numbers. “There is only one option and that is to do this in a series of steady and safe steps. You can’t run out of lockdown. Because all you are doing is running into a third wave and we’ll all be locked up again,” Andrews said. Victoria has been at the centre of Australia’s second wave of Covid-19 infections, recording close to 20,000 of the country’s 26,279 total cases, as well as roughly 90 per cent of deaths, which on Monday topped 800. From early August, Victoria’s capital Melbourne was placed under stage four restrictions including a nightly curfew, with residents only permitted to leave their homes for work and school, exercise, medical reasons or to shop for essentials. IIT Madras’ programme to skill women in technical profession

Chennai, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) on Saturday launched a “Career Back 2 Women (CB2Women)” initiative through its “Digital Skills Academy” to skill women who aspire to return to a technical profession after a break in their career. Overall, as many as 150 hours of training will be offered to skill the women on their journey back to their careers. Candidates will get a choice to opt for any level as certificates will be issued for each level. The IIT Madras Digital Skills Academy is using latest platforms and has tied-up with the Forensic Intelligence Surveillance and Security Technologies (FISST) to offer this programme, the Institute said in a statement. “All participants will take “Back To Technical Track (BTCUBE)”, which is a 20 hour programme that will bring them up-to-date on technologies and demystifies latest jargons. At the end of this programme, they will have a choice to select a specialisation. There are 4 tracks offered initially,” said C. Mohan Ram, Chief Mission Integrator and Innovator, FISST. “Track 1 – Data Science and Big Data, Track 2 – Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Track 3 – Cyber Security with Digital Forensics, Track 4 – Software Engineering with Programming in Python with MongoDB. Liquor to cost more in Karnataka with 17% tax hike

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) With 17 per cent increase in taxes, including 6 per cent additional excise duty (AED), select liquors would cost more in Karnataka from Thursday, an official said on Wednesday. “The state Finance Department has increased tax on select liquors by 17 per cent, including 11 per cent excise duty and 6 per cent AED passed in the state budget for fiscal 2020-21 in March to mobilise more revenue,” Deputy Commissioner, Excise, J. Giri told IANS here. As liquor shops reopened on Monday after 40 days of extended lockdown and sales shot up due to huge demand, official sources said the state government does not anticipate fall in consumption, as the hike was modest compared to similar tax hikes in other states. As the hike applicable only on whisky, brandy, gin and rum, they will be costly by Rs 5 for a quarter (180 ml) from Thursday when shops open for business. With only 6 per cent AED, beer, wine, feni and toddy, their cost will go marginally. Demand for liquor remained high for the third consecutive day, as sales increased to Rs 231.6 crore on Wednesday, as customers bought 39 lakh litres of IML and 7 lakh litres of beer against sales of Rs 197 crore on Tuesday and Rs 45 crore on Monday...
