Bus marshals’ number to be raised to 13,000: Kejriwal

New Delhi, To ensure safety of women in the public transport, number of marshals deployed in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses will be increased to around 13,000. “From tomorrow (Tuesday), marshals are being deployed in every bus for providing safety to women. These 13,000 marshals will also help sick people and deal with any other emergency situations. Delhi is the only state where marshals are being deployed for the safety of people,” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said here on Monday. Addressing newly recruited bus marshals at the Tyagraj Stadium, Kejriwal said he was assigning them with duty to ensure safe ride for women in buses. Make them comfortable in buses, he told marshals. The announcement has come a day before the rollout of the scheme to provide free ride to women in DTC and cluster buses. The move would help achieve government commitment towards boosting security of women in Delhi, he added. Recalling his ‘free-ride’ announcement made on the day of Raksha Bandhan, Kejriwal said he had gifted it to his sisters, which would ensure their safety...

Chandigarh, Terming the AAP’s proposed protest against stubble-burning in the national capital an obvious political stunt with an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections there, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday lashed out at his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal over his “brazen lies on the grave issue of air pollution”. “The air pollution in the capital was directly related to the rampant construction activity, widespread industrialisation and total mismanagement of the city traffic,” he said, hitting out at Kejriwal for “trying desperately to divert public attention from his own government’s failures by indulging in such outright lies”. “By blaming others for his own lapses, Kejriwal was showing signs of his poor leadership.” Describing Kejriwal as a “shameless liar”, Amarinder Singh accused him of resorting to political gimmickry after failing to seriously address the pollution problem in Delhi in the past five years. IIT Madras’ programme to skill women in technical profession

Chennai, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) on Saturday launched a “Career Back 2 Women (CB2Women)” initiative through its “Digital Skills Academy” to skill women who aspire to return to a technical profession after a break in their career. Overall, as many as 150 hours of training will be offered to skill the women on their journey back to their careers. Candidates will get a choice to opt for any level as certificates will be issued for each level. The IIT Madras Digital Skills Academy is using latest platforms and has tied-up with the Forensic Intelligence Surveillance and Security Technologies (FISST) to offer this programme, the Institute said in a statement. “All participants will take “Back To Technical Track (BTCUBE)”, which is a 20 hour programme that will bring them up-to-date on technologies and demystifies latest jargons. At the end of this programme, they will have a choice to select a specialisation. There are 4 tracks offered initially,” said C. Mohan Ram, Chief Mission Integrator and Innovator, FISST. “Track 1 – Data Science and Big Data, Track 2 – Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Track 3 – Cyber Security with Digital Forensics, Track 4 – Software Engineering with Programming in Python with MongoDB. Hong Kong, According to early results, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement has made unprecedented gains in the district council elections, media reports said on Monday. In the figures put out till now, pro-democracy candidates have won 278 seats as against pro-Beijing candidates 42. Hong Kong’s district councillors have little political power and mainly deal with local issues such as bus routes and rubbish collection. And as such they have never normally generated interest, however, these polls were the first time people could express at the ballot box their opinion on embattled Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s handling of the crisis, which was sparked by a now withdrawn extradition law. There was huge turnout even to witness the counting process. Outside the Yau Ma Tei North polling station, residents lined up and as the doors opened, they poured into the public viewing area, the BBC report said. It appeared they wanted to ensure that the process was fair and transparent.There were loud cheers of astonishment as one surprising result came in after another. Nobody imagined such a comprehensive wipeout, the report said. Despite fears the vote could be disrupted or cancelled over the unrest, it went ahead peacefully. A record 4.1 million people had registered to vote — more than half the population. And more than 2.9 million cast votes for the 452 seats available, a turnout of more than 71 per cent, as against 47 per cent in 2015...

Johnson sets Oct 15 deadline for EU trade deal

London, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say that if no agreement on trade between the EU and UK can be reached by October 15 both sides should “accept that and move on”. Johnson will say completing the UK’s exit from the EU without a trade deal would still be a “good outcome”, the BBC reported. It comes after UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK is not “scared” of walking away. Another round of talks – the eighth – is due to begin on Tuesday. But on the eve of the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that the UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement made last year. The new bill would eliminate the legal force of arrangements over customs in Northern Ireland which had been designed to avoid a hard border with the Irish Republic. It would also override provisions on state aid – the financial assistance sometimes given by the government to companies. Government sources told the BBC that the legislation would be introduced this week, describing it as a “sensible fall-back option” in case negoiations break down. They said it was “not intended to derail the talks”, but a key EU diplomat told the BBC it was “a self-defeating strategy” that could lead to the trade talks unravelling altogether...
