KVIC expects 100,000 new jobs in the agarbatti industry

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said, here on Thursday, around 100,000 jobs could be created in the agarbatti (incense stick) industry in the next 8-10 months after the Centre decided to increase import duty on bamboo sticks to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. It would strengthen the incense stick as well as the bamboo industries, said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena. The Finance Ministry recently increased import duty on bamboo sticks as part of the initiative taken by MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari aimed to discourage import and help local industry grow. Import of bamboo sticks from China and Vietnam had caused big employment losses. The rise in import duty will pave the way for new agarbatti manufacturing units to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The incense sticks’ domestic consumption is pegged at 1,490 tonnes a day. But only 760 tonnes a day is produced locally. The huge demand-supply gap led to large-scale import of raw incense sticks. “The import of raw incense sticks increased from just 2 per cent in 2009 to 80 per cent in 2019,” the KVIC said. In value terms, it increased from Rs 31 crore in 2009 to Rs 546 crore in 2019. The UPA government in 2011 had reduced import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. It hit the domestic Indian incense sticks manufacturers hard, causing closure of nearly 25 per cent units, the KVIC said. The KVIC claimed on its request the Commerce Ministry on August 31, 2019 placed the incense stick import under “restricted” category. While it revived hundreds of units in various states, like Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat and several N-E states, it also prompted traders to import round bamboo sticks. The import of bamboo sticks increased from Rs 210 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 370 crore in 2019-20...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) A day after global credit ratings agency Moody’s Investors Services downgraded India’s sovereign ratings as it sees challenges piled up on the country’s policy making institutions to mitigate the risks of a sustained period of relatively low growth, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said the worst is yet to come as the government has not supported the poor and the MSME sector. Former President of the Congress Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “Moody’s has rated Modi’s handling of India’s economy a step above JUNK.” “Lack of support to the poor and the MSME sector means the worst is yet to come,” added Rahul Gandhi. Besides, Moody’s said the Covid-19 pandemic amplifies vulnerabilities in India’s credit profile such as slower growth relative to the country’s potential, rising debt and further weakening of debt affordability and persistent stress in parts of the financial system. Consequently, Moody’s downgraded India’s foreign-currency and local-currency long-term issuer ratings to Baa3 from Baa2. It also downgraded India’s local-currency senior unsecured rating to Baa3 from Baa2, and its short-term local-currency rating to P-3 from P-2. Furthermore, it kept the outlook as negative. Currently, the sovereign rating assigned to India is Baa2 with a negative outlook...

Three persons were arrested for raising anti-Javadekar slogans, while the Opposition workers staged a demonstration with placards saying, ‘Go Back Javadekar’, who also holds the Information and Broadcasting portfolio, outside the venue screening films for the 50th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Union Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday chaired a group of ministers meeting to decide the plan of action by the Centre on COVID-19. The meeting took place at Singh’s residence. However, there was no decision taken on whether to end the lockdown on April 14 or extend it, in the meeting, say sources who attended the GOM. The biggest question in front of the government is weighing in two options — loss of livelihood versus loss of life. However, any decision in this regard will come after PM Modi’s meeting wth floor leaders and Chief Ministers where a common ext plan is to be discussed. Discussion on availability and smooth passage of essential supplies and particularly to Corona hotspots were discussed in the meeting as well, say informed sources. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Amit shah, I&B Minister prakash Javadekar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan among others.The GOM welcomed the decision to reduce salaries of the member of parliaments for a year and suspension of MPLADS for a couple of years, in view of the outbreak.Rajnath Singh tweeted saying, “The ministers also shared their insights on how we can overcome the situation and help the people to stay motivated, determined & vigilant in the battle against COVID-19.”So far 114 people have died due to the coronavirus in India, according to the website of the Union Health Ministry.
