New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday held a meeting with the officials of the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra through video conferencing to take stock of the situation of COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking to the representatives, the minister said that the situation in the states was a matter of concern as at least 36 districts were affected by the COVID-19 disease. “Maharashtra and Gujarat are states in the country which is a matter of worry for us also as 34 out of 36 districts are affected from coronavirus. There are at least 14,541 cases and 583 deaths that have been reported from here,” said the Minister. “I will hold a meeting with the Chief Ministers also to discuss further course of action to control spread of the virus in the state,” said the Minister. He also said that the situation in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Solapur was more worrying and fortunately Gadchiroli and Wardha have remained unaffected. “We have to move towards the direction of making all the districts as green zones where no case would be reported in 21 days. This will be possible for us through proactive approach and strong will power,” the Minister told the representatives. The meeting was also attended by the MoS Health, Ashwani Kumar Choubey. Sunday’s toll includes a whopping 70 deaths in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region alone – the worst-hit in the country, besides 2,487 new positive cases recorded in the state. This comes to roughly one death every 16 minutes, and an average 104 new cases notched every hour, in the state. Maharashtra has been recording 75-plus fatalities and new patients over 2,000 daily for the past six consecutive days, with the last highest figure of 3,041 infections on May 24. With 89 fatalities, the state death toll has touched 2,286 while the total number of Coronavirus patients increased from Saturday’s 65,168 to 67,655 on Sunday. The health department said of the total number of cases declared till date, 36,031 were active, an increase of 1,150 over Saturday’s 34,881. The state has notched a recovery rate of 43.35 per cent and a mortality (death) rate of 3.37 per cent, with the patient doubling time improving to 17.5 days over last week’s 11.3 days, against the national average of 15.7 days. Of the total 89 fatalities on Sunday, 52 were recorded in Mumbai alone, taking the city deaths up from Saturday’s 1,227 to 1,279 now, while the number of Covid-19 positive patients here shot up by 1,244 cases to touch 39,686 now. The state also recorded 2,786 new patients, taking the total of 110,744, but a stupendous recovery rate of 50.61 per cent. This means over half of the patients who are infected are recovering fully and returning home, said an official. Monday’s toll was 24 higher that the previous high of 152 on June 11, while number of cases was 821 less than the highest of 3,607 on May 11 to rest at 2,786. For most of June, the state has been recording three-digit highs – 103 deaths on June 2, 122 on June 3, 123 on June 4, 139 on June 5, 120 on June 6, 109 on June 8, 120 on June 9, 149 on June 10, 152 on June 11, 127 on June 12, 113 on June 13, and 120 on June 14. Monday’s figures work out to roughly one death every 8 minutes, and a whopping 116 new cases notched every hour. With the latest fatalities, the state death toll zoomed past 4,000 to touch 4,128 while the total number of Coronavirus patients catapulted to 110,744 — both highest in the country. Mumbai, (Samajweekly) Maharashtra recorded a new high of 123 Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, even as the state conducted more than half-million – 510,176 tests – of which 77,793 persons have tested positive so far, health officials said here. The state recorded its highest single-day death figure on Thursday, making it the fifth time it has crossed the 100-plus toll in 9 days. The previous highs of three-digit tallies were – 103 (June 2), 105 (May 27), 116 (May 29), and 122 (June 3). Thursday’s toll includes 68 deaths in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region alone – the worst-hit in the country, besides 2,933 new positive cases recorded in the state. This comes to roughly one death every 11 minutes, and an average 122 new cases notched every hour, in the state. Maharashtra has been recording 75-plus fatalities and over 2,000 new patients for the past 10 consecutive days, with the highest figure of 3,041 infections notched on May 24. With 123 fatalities, the state death toll has touched 2,710 while the total number of coronavirus patients increased to 77,793. The Health Department said of the total number of cases declared till date, 41,3939 were active cases – increasing by 1,458 over 39,935 on Wednesday. The state has recorded an encouraging recovery rate of 43.29 percent and a mortality rate 3.48 percent. The state notched 293 Covid deaths on Monday – down from the highest 390 fatalities on Sunday, and recorded 9,181 new cases, dropping below the peak of 12,822 (August 8). The state death toll shot up from 17,757 a day earlier to 18,050, while the total number of cases went up from 515,332 to 524,513 now – both highest in the country. According to Monday’s figures, there was one death roughly every five minutes and a staggering 383 new cases every hour added to the state tally. The state recovery moved up from 68.25 per cent to 68.33 per cent on Monday, while the current mortality (death) rate stood at 3.44 per cent. A total 6,711 recovered patients returned home, taking the total number of discharged patients to 358,421 – considerably higher than the 147,735 ‘active cases’ currently in the state. Of the total 293 fatalities, Mumbai accounted for 46 deaths, followed by 43 in Pune and 42 in Thane.
