Foreign funding case: PTI shows no trust in Pak EC chief

Islamabad, Ahead of a verdict in the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan’s ruling party has raised questions about impartiality of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd.) Sardar Muhammad Raza. Raza is likely to issue a verdict in the foreign funding case before his retirement on December 6. Prime Minister Imran Khan presided over the PTI’s core committee meeting on Sunday and reiterated the party’s demand that Election Commission hear cases of all three major political parties – PTI, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), simultaneously and refrain from singling out PTI. “The ECP should follow rules, give equal opportunities to all the parties and conduct across-the-board accountability,” Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters after the core committee’s meeting. She wondered why applications by the PTI against the PML-N and PPP were not being entertained...

Teachers lack confidence in teaching about Islam

Many teachers, including RE specialists, lack confidence when it comes to teaching about Islam, research by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) has revealed. To help address the issue and improve the understanding and representation of Islam and Muslims, RE Today has created a new cross-phase teaching resource: Picturing Islam, Picturing Muslims. According to an online poll conducted in May 2020, 25 percent of primary and secondary teachers said they were ‘not very confident’, ‘not confident at all, or ‘not sure’ when asked about their views on teaching about Islam. The poll echoes a 2018 survey of primary teachers, which found that only 52 percent felt confident teaching about Islam, compared with 95 percent who were assured about teaching Christianity. The studies also reflect a lack of understanding about Islam in wider society. A report by Ipsos Mori in 2018 reported that 57 percent of the British public did not feel that they had much knowledge or understanding of Islam, and that misconceptions are often widespread. At its conference last year, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers raised concerns about parents withdrawing their children from lessons on Islam. RE Today’s new teaching resource ‘Picturing Islam, Picturing Muslims’ features 24 picture cards and 72 learning activities and lesson ideas, connecting central Muslim concepts and ways of living. Created by RE subject experts, it explores both British and global Islam, and includes well-known Muslims who are in the public eye, such as footballer Mo Salah; Mayor of London, Sadiq Kahn; and chef author and TV presenter, Nadiya Hussain MBE...

मेरा घर… जहाँ दरवाजे बंद है, बाहर की हवा अंदर नही आती, अंदर की हवा बाहर नाही जाती। मेरा घर.. जहाँ बात नही होती, बस होता है… चिखना-चिल्लना, गाली-गेलोच और मार-पीट! मेरा घर… जहाँ बताये हुये आदेशों पर चालना पडता है, हुक्म को मानना पडता है! मेरा घर … जहाँ एक ही की आवाज होती है, और दुसरें के तो सांसो की आहटें! मेरा घर …. वैसे तो देखने मैं हर चीज अपनी जागह पर है, पर … वहा के लोग घर मे रहना पसंद ही नाही करते! मेरा घर.. वहा मेरी सांसे रुक जाती है, दिल की धडकन तेज हो जाती है, मन भारी होने लागता है। वह कहता है … “निकल यहाँ से … कहीं और चाली जा ! … नही तो यहाँ साँसे फुल जायेगी!” सोचती हुँ… चली ही जाऊँ घर छोड़कर! वैसे तो कहने को मेरा वहां कुछ भी नही है… … सिवाय जमाणे के रिवाज के! -हेमांगी..

Yogi reviews security ahead of Babri anniversary

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed all civil and police officials to ensure adequate security measures ahead of the Babri mosque demolition anniversary on December 6. The anniversary is the first after the Supreme Court announced its verdict on November 9, giving the entire disputed land to Hindus for temple construction and offered a five acre land elsewhere for the mosque. Majority of the Muslim petitioners have rejected the offer of a five acre plot of land for mosque and are planning to file a review petition against the top court verdict. The chief minister, who reviewed the security arrangements, said that all security arrangements will remain in place till December 15. According to an official statement, the chief minister emphasized on regular foot patrolling, UP-112 patrolling and having regular interaction with peace committees and religious leaders. He also underlined the need for having CCTV cameras at religious places, commercial and industrial establishments, ATMs and banks and other vital installations...

The partition debate has again started in Parliament by Home Minister Amit Shah who said that said Congress divided India and virtually gave a clean chit to both Hindu Mahasabha as well as Muslim league who believed in the two nation theory. There is no point to discuss here that Indian leadership was not merely pragmatic but statesman and showed huge maturity in dealing with the issue and that is why a leader like Nehru are born but once. It is absolutely difficult to be like him if we were living in today’s poisonous atmosphere. There were agreement between Nehru and Liaqat Ali Khan related to treatment to minorities in our respective countries. Pakistan failed in it miserably as its secular leadership passed away and the country was under the control of the military after the first decade only. The division of Pakistan and creation of a new state like Bangladesh happened that religion alone can not unite people and nationalities. The situation was so bad in Pakistan that one of the main architect of Pakistan constitution, Jogendra Nath Mandal had to resign and leave Pakistan accusing the then leadership of allowing the violence against minorities. Though Bangladesh became a reality on linguistic nationalism yet in the last two decade Jamat-e-Islami and other tehreeks there have radicalised people. Bangladesh became a hot bed against secular and minorities. Pakistan has similar conditions though the government in both the countries are now trying to look ‘progressive’ but the extra state actors like Jamat e Islami and many other Jamats have destroyed the social fabric in the two countries...
