New Delhi, Faizan Mustafa, the Vice-Chancellor of the NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad, in an interview with The Wire has argued that India’s concept of citizenship has been restricted and undermined. Mustafa also claimed that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam violated the Citizenship Act, 1955. “The NRC is a clear violation of Section 3 of the Citizenship Act. I am clear about it,” he said. Mustafa also said that NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela’s arguments were “laughable”. Citing nuances of the Citizenship Act, he argued, “We cannot be denying citizenship to anybody or deny inclusion in NRC.” Citing legal problems, Mustafa asserted that the final NRC list for Assam published on August 31 was unconstitutional. Taking a dig at the Supreme Court, Mustafa said the refusal to include in the NRC those born in India between Republic Day 1950 and June 30, 1987 was “a self-inflicted wound in which the Supreme Court is also a party.” “I would say that in this matter what was expected from the court has not been delivered,” he said. Mustafa also compared the Foreigners Tribunals to “Kangaroo courts”, claiming that they were not independent of the government. He pointed out that their members served at the government’s pleasure and those tribunal members who did not declare enough people as foreigners are often dispensed with. He called the Foreigners Tribunals “citizenship exclusion entities”...

Washington, (Samajweekly) US President Donald Trump has reiterated his intention to withdraw US troops from Iraq but gave no detailed timeline. Speaking to reporters in the White House with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Trump on Thursday said that “we have been taking our troops out of Iraq fairly rapidly, and we look forward to the day when we don’t have to be there,” Xinhua reported. “At some point, we obviously will be gone. We’ve brought it down to a very, very low level,” Trump added when asked if the US would pull troops out of Iraq in three years. Pressed by reporters on the timeframe of the full withdrawal from Iraq, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vaguely replied that a complete pullout would take place “as soon as we complete the mission.” The chief diplomat noted that Washington is working with Baghdad “to get our forces down to the lowest level as quickly as we possibly can.” Commander of US Central Command Kenneth McKenzie said at a think tank event earlier this month that he expected US military to maintain a long-term presence in Iraq to help fight Islamic extremists and to check Iranian influence in the country. The two countries held a strategic dialogue this June, the joint statement of which said that the US would reduce forces from Iraq over the coming months. Currently, there are over 5,000 US troops deployed in Iraq to support Iraqi forces in battles against remnants of the Islamic State, mainly for training and advisory purposes. Citing US officials, The New York Times reported last week that US and Iraqi officials had resumed discussions this month that could lead to a reduction to around 3,500 US troops...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Baghdad, (Samajweekly) Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said that the Iraqi forces will launch a major offensive to eradicate Islamic State (IS) militants, and that the paramilitary Hashd Shaabi fighters will be at the forefront of the security forces in the upcoming offensive. A statement by his office on Saturday said that al-Kadhimi made his comment during a visit to the headquarters of the Hashd Shaabi Command, in which he said “we are about to conduct a final offensive to root out IS organization, which is trying to reorganize its remnants,” Xinhua news agency reported. “The Hashd Shaabi fighters are at the forefront of implementing this offensive alongside their brothers in the army and the other security forces,” al-Kadhimi said. Al-Kadhimi’s comment came as the extremist IS militants intensified their attacks on the security forces, including Hashd Shaabi forces, and civilians in the Sunni provinces which once were under the control of IS militants, since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, resulting in the killing and wounding of dozens of people. The security situation in Iraq has been improving since Iraqi security forces fully defeated the IS militants across the country late in 2017. However, IS remnants have since melted in urban areas or resorted to deserts and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians...
