On days of smog and poor visibility in our cities, we fear the future might already be here,” the President said while speaking at a meeting with IITians and other technical institutes in Rashtrapati Bhavan. “This is that time of the year when the air quality of the national capital as well as of many other cities worsens beyond all norms. We are facing a kind of challenge here that we have never faced before,” he added. The President said that hydrocarbon energy changed the face of the world in the last couple of centuries, but “now it is threatening our very existence”. Noida, (Samajweekly) Noida reported 27 more Covid-19 patients across 16 sectors even as the virus reached the rural areas, including Jewar, according to the bulletin released by the Gautam Buddha Nagar administration. On a positive note, five patients were cured and discharged, including a 4-year-old male child. Noida presently has 209 active cases, while 353 patients have recovered till date. The GB Nagar administration has been regularly conducting screening in various locations to detect the infected person. With the biggest ever jump of 9,851 new cases and 273 deaths in the past 24 hours, the Covid-19 tally in India reached 2,26,770 on Friday, Health Ministry data revealed. The surge comes amid the first phase of unlock after a two-month shutdown even as the government plans to open religious places from next week. Of the total cases, 1,10,960 are active, and 1,09,462 have recovered, while 6,348 lost the battle against the pandemic so far. London, (Samajweekly) British supermarket chain Tesco announced that it will create 16,000 new permanent roles in a bid to support the development of online businesses which have surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 16,000 jobs are in addition to the 4,000 permanent jobs which have already created since the start of the pandemic, said the company on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported. “The roles will include 10,000 pickers to assemble customer orders and 3,000 drivers to deliver them, plus a variety of other roles in stores and distribution centers,” said the company. Currently, the retail giant serves nearly 1.5 million customers a week online, up from around 600,000 at the start of the pandemic. As its online business continues to grow, “the number of new roles may increase further in the coming months,” said the company. Meanwhile, before the pandemic, around 9 per cent of Tesco’s sales were online. The figure is now more than 16 per cent of sales, with Tesco expecting online sales of over 5.5 billion pounds (US $7.2 billion) this year, up from 3.3 billion pounds (US $4.3 billion) last year. Brussels, (Samajweekly) The European Commission concluded exploratory talks with Moderna, an American biotechnology company focused on drug discovery, drug development and vaccine technologies, to purchase a potential vaccine against the COVID-19, the Commission said in a statement. The Commission envisaged a contract with the Massachusetts-based pharmaceutic company on behalf of the member states of the European Union (EU) to purchase 80 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, with an option to buy 80 million more. The purchases will be supplied once a vaccine has proven to be safe and effective against COVID-19, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said: “After intense negotiations, the European Commission has now concluded talks with a fifth pharmaceutical company to enable rapid access to a vaccine against coronavirus for Europeans.” The Commission has completed talks with Sanofi-GSK, Johnson & Johnson and CureVac, and signed an early purchase agreement with AstraZeneca for the vaccines. It continues to pursue discussions with other producers as well, said the statement. The EU has a strategy aiming to secure for all European citizens high-quality, safe, effective and affordable vaccines within 12 to 18 months.
