Exoplanet that vanished from sight likely never existed

Washington, (Samajweekly) What astronomers thought was a planet beyond our solar system has now seemingly vanished from sight, suggesting that the exoplanet likely never existed. The object, called Fomalhaut b, was first announced in 2008, based on observations made by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in 2004 and 2006. It was clearly visible in several years of Hubble observations that revealed it was a moving dot. But data analysis of Hubble images taken in 2014 showed the object had vanished. A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggests that the Hubble was instead looking at an expanding cloud of very fine dust particles from two icy bodies that smashed into each other. Hubble came along too late to witness the suspected collision but may have captured its aftermath, said the study. The missing-in-action planet was last seen orbiting the star Fomalhaut, 25 light years away. “These collisions are exceedingly rare and so this is a big deal that we actually get to see evidence of one,” said Andras Gaspar, an assistant astronomer at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory and lead author of a research paper announcing the discovery...

Washington, (Samajweekly) NASA and SpaceX launched Crew Dragon spacecraft from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Saturday, carrying two American astronauts to the International Space Station. The Crew Dragon, atop the Falcon 9 rocket, took off from the same site used for the first moon landing in 1969 at 15.22ET. It’s the first private space vehicle to transport astronauts into orbit, the BBC reported. They’ll reach their initial orbit in around nine minutes, and part of the rocket will return to earth to be reused. Astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken should reach the space station at around 10.30ET/15.30BST on Sunday. 10 minutes after the launch, the first stage of the rocket came down onto the ship, named Of Course I Still Love You. Washington, (Samajweekly) NASA has released some stunning and phenomenal images of the universe — galaxies, supernova remnants, stars, planetary nebulas processed by its ‘Chandra X-Ray Observatory’ — the world’s most powerful x-ray telescope. Launched on July 23, 1999, the observatory allows scientists to capture X-ray images of various high energy regions in the universe. X-rays were produced in the cosmic world when the matter heats up to millions of degrees. They are emitted from black holes, neutron stars or supernova remnants. Each composite image released by NASA contains X-ray data from Chandra as well as other telescopes. The objects represent a range of different astrophysical objects and include the galaxy Messier 82, the galaxy cluster Abell 2744, the supernova remnant 1987 A, the binary star system Eta Carinae, the Cartwheel galaxy and the planetary nebula Helix Nebula. The International space agency took to micro-blogging site Twitter and shared beautiful images of the cosmic world with the caption, “Observing our universe in different kinds of light Milky Way”. “Each of these images combines data from our @ChandraXray Observatory with data from other missions,” NASA wrote. The compilation gives examples of images from different missions and telescopes being combined to understand better the science of the universe. Each of these images contains data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory as well as other telescopes. Washington,(Samajweekly) Scripting a historic chapter for the US space programme, Elon Musk-run SpaceX on Saturday sent two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) onboard the reusable Falcon 9 rocket. The SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley was on its way to the orbiting laboratory in the space and had safely reached orbit, NASA said in a statement. It is the first time that astronauts have been sent into space from the US soil since 2011. It is also the first time that US astronauts have been sent into space by a private company, signalling an end to the US dependence on the Russian space technology. The Crew Dragon spacecraft lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the same site used for the first moon landing in 1969, reports CNN. “I can’t believe it with my own eyes. I’m so grateful they’re up there,” said SpaceX engineer Lauren Lyons, who frequently hosts SpaceX’s mission webcasts. The journey would take approximately 19 hours and the astronauts should reach the space station at around 10.30 ET (eastern time) on Sunday, according to NASA. After successfully docking, Behnken and Hurley will be welcomed aboard station and will become members of the Expedition 63 crew. They will perform tests on Crew Dragon in addition to conducting research and other tasks with the space station crew. Washington, (Samajweekly) While scientists around the world are confined to their homes during the Covid-19 pandemic, NASA’s Earth-observing satellites continue to orbit and send back images that reveal connections between the pandemic and environment. “Satellites collect data all the time and don’t require us to go out anywhere,” said Hannah Kerner, an assistant research professor at the University of Maryland in the US. Kerner is among eight researchers recently awarded a rapid-turnaround project grant, which supports investigators as they explore how Covid-19 lockdown measures are impacting the environment and how the environment can affect how the virus is spread. The newest group of projects includes six that are looking to satellite images to help reveal how Covid-19 lockdown measures are impacting food security, fire ecology, urban surface heat, clouds and warming, air pollution and precipitation, water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Two projects are exploring how the environment could be impacting how the virus is spread by monitoring dust and weather.
