New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday held a meeting, via video conference, with Gujrat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Administrator Praful Patel over cyclone Nisarga. He assured all Central help in view of the impending cyclone and asked the states to chalk out in details the requirements and resources needed to deal with the situation. Earlier, the Home Minister held a meeting to take stock of the situation and preparedness to deal with Cyclone ‘Nisarga’ brewing in the Arabian Sea. Shah held the review meeting with senior officials of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai was also present in the meeting. Days after the country’s eastern coast was battered by Amphan, a fresh cyclone has begun brewing over the Arabian Sea on the western coast and is expected to hit some parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The IMD on Monday sounded a ‘Yellow’ warning for north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coast. Cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’ will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and other neighbouring states, the MD cautioned on Monday. It said that the depression in the Arabian Sea is slated to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’ and cross north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigad district and Daman on June 3. The IMD has informed that the well marked low pressure area over southeast and adjoining east central Arabian Sea & Lakshadweep area concentrated into a depression and it is very likely to intensify into a deep depression during next 12 hours and intensify further into a cyclonic Storm over East central Arabian Sea during the subsequent 24 hours...

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) Indian and foreign experts are now in the final stages of capping the oil well leakage and dousing the fire at the state-owned Oil India (OIL) field in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district. “The experts and engineers expected to control the outflow of gas and oil condensate and douse the blaze at any moment,” a top OIL official told IANS over phone on Monday evening from the accident site. Natural gas and oil condensate started leaking from an OIL’s oil well around three months ago. The leakage caught fire 70-days ago on June 9. An OIL press release also said that the well capping operation was initiated on Monday morning and the capping BOP (Blow Out Preventive) stack was successfully placed over the well head. “The 16 studs have also been tightened. The preparations for killing operations are on. The BOP and the lines connected to it are being kept cool through continuous spraying of water,” it added. The OIL official said that the excavation of ramps and cellar and opening of a wellhead flange are complete while other technical formalities and requirements are underway. The OIL official said that as part of the final phase of preparation for the killing operation after capping of the well, sufficient chemicals are in place at site. American and Canadian experts and engineers, who are associated with Singapore-based M/S ALERT, firefighters, NDRF personnel and OIL and ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) engineers continued their efforts to check the gas leak and douse the well fire at Baghjan. The OIL official, who refused to be named, said that besides flood and hostile weather, experts, engineers and workers have been facing numerous other problems in putting out the fire and capping the gas leak at Baghjan (in Tinsukia district), around 550 kms east of Assam’s main city of Guwahati...

Mumbai, (Samajweekly) Maharashtra braced for the onslaught of the Cyclone ‘Nisarga’ currently hovering around 175 kms from south-southwest of Mumbai — which is expected to make a landfall near Harihareshwar in adjoining Raigad district sometime on Wednesday afternoon. All emergency services, the police, fire brigade, NDRF and SDRF, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Home Guards and others are fully geared for the anticipated fallout of the cyclone, while the domestic flight operations have been curtailed as a precaution. Slated to hit Raigad at a dizzying wind speed of 110-120 kmph over the next six hours, it is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, the effects will be experienced in the entire Konkan coastal region and adjoining districts of western Maharashtra, said IMD, Mumbai. Presently, the Nisarga is being tracked by the Doppler Weather Radars in Mumbai and Goa as it swirls gradually towards the land. According to the IMD, the tropical storm is currently 130 kilometres from Alibaug, 175 kilometres from Mumbai and 400 kilometres from Surat in Gujarat. The IMD has also warned of a storm surge of 0.5 to one meter, which is going to inundate areas up to two kilometres in Maharashtra’s Raigad and Thane districts. The Mumbai International Airport Ltd. announced on Wednesday that it will operate only 19 flights — including 11 outgoing — instead of the regular 50 daily, in view of the cyclone. The flights shall be operated by Air India, AirAsia, IndiGo, GoAir and SpiceJet subject to possible last-minute changes in schedules, Mumbai has been battered by continuous rains since Tuesday evening and this morning, several low lying were inundated in the city and suburbs. While prohibitory orders are clamped in the city, Mumbai Police and other security forces are out in full swing to ensure people don’t step out to the sea fronts, promenades or beaches and other open spaces...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Guwahati, (Samajweekly) The army has started to build a 150-metre bridge over a water body to facilitate technical works to control gas leakage and oil well fire in the Tinsukia district of Assam, according to officials, here on Wednesday. In view of the urgency of the situation, Tinsukia District Deputy Commissioner Bhaskar Pegu requested the army to construct a bridge over a water body adjacent to the blowout well, said an OIL official. “The army is ferrying 17 trucks of material for the bailey bridge from 3 Corps army base at Misamari in the Tezpur district,” the official said. Gas and oil condensate leakage at the Oil India’s (OIL) oil well at Baghjan, around 550 km east of here, started on May 27. It caught fire on June 9, killing two OIL fire fighters and injuring many others. Experts from Singapore-based Alert along with ONGC, OIL and NDRF engineers and specialists are making efforts to cap gas and oil leakage and douse the fire, which continued for the ninth day on Wednesday. All India Radio, Dibrugarh, is twice a day broadcasting a bulletin called “Baghjan Barta” since June 13 to inform people about the progress in capping the well. According to an official release, OIL lost 6,132 tonnes of crude oil production and 7.97 mmscmd (million metric standard cubic metre per day) of natural gas due to blockades by locals and student organisations in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. The agitators are demanding higher compensation and have accused OIL for the mishap. The government-owned OIL has provided Rs 30,000 to each of the affected families. Security forces have been deployed at the agitation sites by the district administrations...
