New Delhi, The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved the deferral of receipt of spectrum auction dues from telecom companies for two years — 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 — in view of their financial stress. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that as per the recommendations of the panel of secretaries, the deferral amounts will now be equally spread over the remaining instalments to be paid by telecom service providers (TSPs) without any increase in the existing time period specified for making the payments. Sitharaman said that interest, as stipulated while auctioning the spectrum, will be charged so that the net present value (NPV) of the payable amount is protected. TSPs opting for deferment will have to provide bank guarantee for the revised payable amount...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Union Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday chaired a group of ministers meeting to decide the plan of action by the Centre on COVID-19. The meeting took place at Singh’s residence. However, there was no decision taken on whether to end the lockdown on April 14 or extend it, in the meeting, say sources who attended the GOM. Discussion on availability and smooth passage of essential supplies and particularly to Corona hotspots were discussed in the meeting as well, say informed sources. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Amit shah, I&B Minister prakash Javadekar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan among others. The GOM welcomed the decision to reduce salaries of the member of parliaments for a year and suspension of MPLADS for a couple of years, in view of the outbreak.Rajnath Singh tweeted saying, “The ministers also shared their insights on how we can overcome the situation and help the people to stay motivated, determined & vigilant in the battle against COVID-19.”So far 114 people have died due to the coronavirus in India, according to the website of the Union Health Ministry. A total of 325 people have recovered since the first case was reported in the country on January 30...

New Delhi, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and demanded the Union Territory’s share in central taxes and funds for Delhi municipal corporation. This is Delhi government’s first meeting with the Union Finance Ministry after the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party government in the Union Territory. Sisodia, who is also Delhi’s Finance Minister, said, “After re-assuming the charge of Delhi’s Finance Minister, I met the Union Finance Minister today. There has been a positive discussion with him on cooperation for the economic development of Delhi.” “During the meeting with the Union Finance Minister, I asked for funds to be provided for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in the same way as the central government gives (Rs 488 per capita per year) to the municipal corporations of other states. As of now, Delhi receives no funds from the central government for the municipal corporation,” he added. The three municipal corporations of Delhi are ruled by the BJP. The municipal corporation has raised the issue of lack of funds in the past several years. New Delhi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, here on Wednesday, the changes approved by the Cabinet was aimed at de-criminalisation of provisions of the Companies Act, 2013 and was in line with the intent to make doing business in the country easier. The amendments to the Act pertain to removal of sections that result in criminalisation. The Cabinet had suggested 72 changes to 65 sections of the Act with focus on decriminalising the law. Of the 66 compoundable offences, 23 have been decriminalised and the rest will be dealt with under an in-house adjudicating framework. Of these, 7 compoundable offences will be omitted and punishment for 11 other compoundable offences be limited to fine and no imprisonment. Five offences will now be dealt with under different alternative frameworks, according to the Finance Minister. She said the quantum of penalties for six defaults, decriminalised earlier, would also be reduced. The ‘ease of doing business’ in the country was the government’s motto and the cabinet decision was aimed at that, she added. According to sources, the adjudicating framework has faceless and non-discriminatory approach, ruling out any bias...
