New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said, here on Thursday, around 100,000 jobs could be created in the agarbatti (incense stick) industry in the next 8-10 months after the Centre decided to increase import duty on bamboo sticks to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. It would strengthen the incense stick as well as the bamboo industries, said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena. The Finance Ministry recently increased import duty on bamboo sticks as part of the initiative taken by MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari aimed to discourage import and help local industry grow. Import of bamboo sticks from China and Vietnam had caused big employment losses. The rise in import duty will pave the way for new agarbatti manufacturing units to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The incense sticks’ domestic consumption is pegged at 1,490 tonnes a day. But only 760 tonnes a day is produced locally. The huge demand-supply gap led to large-scale import of raw incense sticks. “The import of raw incense sticks increased from just 2 per cent in 2009 to 80 per cent in 2019,” the KVIC said. In value terms, it increased from Rs 31 crore in 2009 to Rs 546 crore in 2019. The UPA government in 2011 had reduced import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. It hit the domestic Indian incense sticks manufacturers hard, causing closure of nearly 25 per cent units, the KVIC said. The KVIC claimed on its request the Commerce Ministry on August 31, 2019 placed the incense stick import under “restricted” category. While it revived hundreds of units in various states, like Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat and several N-E states, it also prompted traders to import round bamboo sticks. The import of bamboo sticks increased from Rs 210 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 370 crore in 2019-20...

Bengaluru, The government would spend a whopping Rs 5 lakh crore over the next two years in infrastructure projects to spur the economy and create thousands of jobs, Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday. “We will spend Rs 2 lakh crore in infrastructure projects in this fiscal (2019-20) and Rs 3 lakh crore in the next fiscal (2020-21) to boost the economy and generate employment in thousands,” Gadkari said at a trade event here. Asserting that there was no dearth of funds for the infrastructure sector, the minister said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would lease land flanking the highways across the country for building petrol-filling stations, logistics parks, bus ways and parking plazas to generate Rs 30,000 crore annually from the transport ecosystem. “We have invited IIT engineers to develop technologies that will reduce the cost of constructing world class roads and highways across the country,” Gadkari told the stakeholders at the 10th edition of CII-Excon 2019, organised by the India Inc’s apex body, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) on the city’s outskirts. NHAI will step up building roads and highways up to 40 km daily by March from 30 km daily presently...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) As India has entered the third week of its 21-day nationwide lockdown and its total active cases of Coronavirus reached 3,981, this year’s World Health Day, unlike other years, assumed huge significance for lawmakers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Today on #WorldHealthDay, let us not only pray for each other’s good health and well-being but also reaffirm our gratitude towards all those doctors, nurses, medical staff and healthcare workers who are bravely leading the battle against the COVID-19 menace.” It’s not just the Prime Minister, but politicians from across the barrier stressed the importance of good health and to honour those who keep us healthy — doctors, nurses, health workers. Congress’s Randip Singh Surjewala took to Twitter to say: “#WorldHealthDay reminds us of the importance of good health every year. Today, when the whole world is fighting against Corona, pledge to create a better environment for living on earth, today.” He added, “On this occasion, all the doctors, nurses and health workers should be thanked, who are the advance warriors of this battle.” Meanwhile, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari too took to Twitter and posted a photo expressing gratitude to health staff and paramedics “protecting our lives”. He said: “Saluting every health worker on the frontlines fighting the novel coronavirus and safeguarding our lives. #WorldHealthDay”..

Gandhinagar, Of the nearly 72,000 children admitted to the Sick Newborn Care (SNC) units of government hospitals across Gujarat, over 15,000 died in 2 years, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government claims to be a leading state on all fronts. Patel said the government was taking steps to curb infants deaths during treatment. The steps included priority to appointment of pediatricians and medical officers, and imparting special training to doctors and nursing staff, as well as maintaining adequate stock of equipment and other essential items at these units...
