Jammu, (Samajweekly) As many as 182 tested positive for coronavirus on Friday in J&K, taking the total number of Covid-19 patients in the Union Territory to 3,324. A statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department said of the new cases, 108 were in Kashmir division and 74 in Jammu division. So far, 36 people have died after they were infected by the dreaded virus in J&K. As many as 1,086 patients have completely recovered while the number of active cases in J&K is now 2,202 out of which 629 are in Jammu division and 1,573 are in Kashmir division...

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor, G.C. Murmu, on Thursday handed over an ex-gratia relief of Rs 20 lakh to the family members of Sarpanch Ajay Bharti, who was killed by terrorists in Anantnag district on Monday. While paying homage to Bharti, Murmu observed that the supreme sacrifice made by him would always be remembered and the perpetrators of the dastardly act would realise their follies and desist from committing crimes against humanity, a statement issued by the government said. “The relief amounting to Rs 20 lakh includes Rs 5 lakh from SRE, Rs 1 lakh as ex-gratia from the government, Rs 4 lakh from Lt Governor Relief Fund, and Rs 10 lakh out of the Panchayat Welfare Fund,” the statement said. Ajay Pandita Bharti, a resident of Panchayat Halqa Lukhbawan in Anantnag district, was killed after terrorists shot at him from close range on Monday. Over 100 rioters have been arrested, said the police on Wednesday. Around 60 police personnel have sustained injuries in the violent incidents of stone pelting and attacks by rioters that erupted on Tuesday evening. Police had to resort to firing in order to bring the situation under control. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the city while curfew was clamped in the D.J. Halli and K.G. Halli police station limits. On Tuesday, the two police stations were targets of the violence. City Commissioner of Police Kamal Pant said that 110 rioters have been arrested in connection with the violence. He also tweeted that the nephew of local MLA, accused of circulating an offensive Facebook post, has been arrested. Police officials said that protestors had rained bottles at a police van transporting police personnel to the affected area. Property of the Congress Legislator from Pulakeshi Nagar constituency was attacked and vandalised while several police vehicles were damaged in the violence unleashed by the irate mob on Tuesday...

Para commandos begin final assault on holed up terrorists in J&K

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Security forces including para commandos started the ‘first light intervention’ on Sunday to flush out the holed up terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district where a standoff had been going on between the holed up terrorists and the security forces since midnight. “Firing exchanges had stopped around 12 a.m. today and since three army soldiers and two local policemen are also inside the house which the terrorists are using as a fortified bunker, room intervention by the para commandos is being carried out with utmost caution,” a top intelligence officer told IANS. Sources also told IANS that there has been no contact with the security personnel yet who had entered the house to sort out the terrorists without causing any collateral damage to civilian life and property. It must be recalled that an army Colonel, who is the commanding officer of the Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Rajwar area of Handwara tehsil, his company commander, a major, the Colonel’s buddy (soldier guarding the officer) and two policemen including a sub-inspector, who is the incharge of the SOG camp in the area and his guard, a police constable, had risked their lives during the operation when they chose to enter the house to eliminate the hiding terrorists on Saturday. “Without caring for their safety in the true tradition of the Indian army wherein the officers lead our boys from the front, the Colonel and the major entered the house to sort out the hiding terrorists. “Equally bravely did the police officer and his guard join the army officers to ensure that the hiding terrorists are eliminated without any collateral damage,” top sources told IANS...
