BJP looks for multiple gains from RS poll

Bhopal, (Samajweekly) The Congress seems content with the sole Rajya Sabha seat that it will bag through Saturday’s poll. It has asked its legislators to commit 54 of their first preference votes to Digivjaya Singh and thus sacrifice Phool Singh Baraiya, the second candidate. Digvijaya Singh is seeking a re-entry to the Upper House. He needs 52 MLAs’ support. The Congress has 92 MLAs. The Congress was once well-placed to send two of the three candidates to the Upper House. It will now watch its former star Jyotiraditya Scindia win as a BJP candidate along with a rank outsider Sumer Singh Solanki. The BJP hopes to make a political capital from the easy passage of Digvijaya Singh. Phool Siingh Baraiya, the second candidate of Congress, might secure 38 of the 40 Congress votes and might end up as a loser. Baraiya is a popular Daalit leader from the Chambal-Gwalior region. With two additional votes committed to Digvijay Singh, Baraiya would need 14 additional votes and hope for some votes being rejected. After Scindia’s rebellion, Baraiya was nominated to influence the 16 seats that will witness by-elections in the Chambal-Gwalior region. The BJP will now turn it into a campaign issue saying the Congress propped up an upper caste candidate at the expense of a Dalit leader...

Huge cache of arms seized in Assam, five terrorists held

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) In one of the largest seizures of arms and ammunition in recent times, security forces led by the Indian Army during a 12-day-long search operation recovered a big cache of firearms of various calibers and explosives from Assam’s Chirang district along the India-Bhutan borders, defence sources said on Monday. In a separate development, the Army, Assam Rifles and the state security forces in joint operations apprehended three United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) and two National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) militants and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession. Defence spokesman Lt. Col. P. Khongsai said that acting on intelligence inputs, a unit of the Red Horns Division of the Indian Army conducted a joint operation along with Assam Police, SSB and COBRA battalion in the forested area of Lal Patthar in Chirang district in northern Assam. “The search for 12 days yielded recovery of a huge cache of firearms including grenades, explosives, RPG and mortar bombs. The operation has resulted in the second biggest unearthing of arms in the area in recent times. The recovery has been beneficial in ensuring peace in the region,” Khongsai said. The recovery also goes a long way in maintaining peace, keeping in mind the upcoming Bodo Territorial Council elections in the area. Khongsai said that Assam Rifles troopers under the command of the Army in an operation apprehended three cadres of ULFA (I) near the Chasa village in Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday...

JCO killed in ‘stand-off firing’ by Pak on LoC

New Delhi, A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army was killed in ‘stand-off firing’ from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan on Tuesday, sources in the defence ministry said. The incident took place in Kalal area in the Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir, a day after India acceded to Pakistan’s demand that no ceasefire violations should be done as a group of diplomats and journalists were to be taken on a tour along the LoC. “The officer was killed in a kind of tactical action by Pakistani forces from across the LoC,” said a source. Earlier in the day, Pakistan had also violated the ceasefire along the LoC in Balakote in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said a 60-year-old woman, Phool Jehan, from Gohald tehsil was injured in the shelling. She was later shifted to the district hospital in Rajouri for treatment. On the intervening night of October 19 and 20, Pakistan had violated ceasefire in the Tangdhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir resulting in the death of two soldiers and a civilian. As per Army sources, children have been restrained from attending schools along the LoC with incessant ceasefire violations by Pakistan. The number of ceasefire violations by Pakistan has been one of the highest in the past several years. Till October 10, ceasefire violations had crossed the 2,300 mark as compared to 1,629 in the entire calendar year of 2018...

Bollywood lyricist Yogesh passes away at 77

Mumbai, (Samajweekly) Veteran Bollywood lyricist Yogesh passed away in Mumbai on Friday. He was 77. Playback legend Lata Mangeshkar paid homage to the late lyricist on Twitter. She wrote: “Mujhe abhi pata chala ki dil ko chunewale geet likhnewale kavi Yogesh ji ka aaj swargwas hua. Ye sunke mujhe bahut dukh hua. Yogesh ji ke likhe kai geet maine gaaye. Yogesh ji bahut shaant aur madhur swabhav ke insan the. Main unko vinamra shraddhanjali arpan karti hun (I just came to know of the demise of the poet Yogesh ji whose songs touched one’s heart. The news pains me. I have sung songs that Yogesh ji wrote. Yogesh ji was a man of gentle disposition. I offer him my humble tribute).” The veteran lyricist was not keeping well for a while now and, according to a report in nationalheraldindia.com, he was staying with a disciple in the Mumbai suburb of Nala Sopara. Some of Yogesh’s best lyrics were in the films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. He wrote classics such as “Zindagi kaise yeh paheli” and “Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye” in “Anand”. His memorable numbers include “Rajinigandha phool tumhare” and “Kayi baar yun hi dekha hai” in “Rajinigandha”; “Badi sooni sooni hai” in “Mili”; “Jaaneman jaaneman” and “Na jaane kyun” in “Chhoti Si Baat”; ”Rimjhim giray saawan” in “Manzil”; and ”Na bole tum na maine kuchh kaha” in “Baton Baton Mein”, among numerous others. Born in Lucknow in 1943, Yogesh arrived in Bombay of the sixties to be a poet and also a lyricist in films. His first Bollywood break was as a lyricist in the film Sakhi Robin (1962). He penned six songs for the film directed by BJ Patel and starring Rajan Kapoor, Nilofar and Babu Raje...
