Chandigarh, Terming the AAP’s proposed protest against stubble-burning in the national capital an obvious political stunt with an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections there, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday lashed out at his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal over his “brazen lies on the grave issue of air pollution”. “The air pollution in the capital was directly related to the rampant construction activity, widespread industrialisation and total mismanagement of the city traffic,” he said, hitting out at Kejriwal for “trying desperately to divert public attention from his own government’s failures by indulging in such outright lies”. “By blaming others for his own lapses, Kejriwal was showing signs of his poor leadership.” Describing Kejriwal as a “shameless liar”, Amarinder Singh accused him of resorting to political gimmickry after failing to seriously address the pollution problem in Delhi in the past five years. Now that Delhi was reeling under dangerously hazardous levels of pollution, the AAP chief had suddenly decided to turn his attention to the critical issue, said Amarinder Singh, questioning Kejriwal on the steps taken by his government to tackle the problem...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Washington, (Samajweekly) US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that he was concerned about a second wave of COVID-19 infections, which he believes would dampen consumer confidence and hurt economic recovery. “So there is clearly a risk of a second outbreak or a second wave. And you know, that will be challenging,” Powell made the remarks in a virtual discussion with former Fed Vice Chairman Alan Blinder, held by the Princeton University, on Friday. He said a full recovery of the economy will really depend on people being confident that it is safe to go out and safe to engage in a broad range of economic activities, reports Xinhua news agency. “That’s how the economy will recover,” he said. “I think a second wave could be what would really undermine public confidence and might make for a significantly longer recovery, weaker recovery.” When asked about the Fed’s stance on negative interest rates, Powell said “we don’t think that that’s an inappropriate tool here in the US”. “I would say the evidence on whether it actually works is mixed,” he said. “There were clearly some negative side effects.” In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Fed cut interest rates to near zero at two unscheduled meetings in March and began purchasing massive quantities of US treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities to repair financial markets...

Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu, in a notification declared the jail premises as “containment zone” after the detection of the case. “Any unauthorised entry or exit and movement of any vehicle have been barred till the area is declared safe as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,” said Pegu, also the chairman of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Disaster Management Authority. Jail sources said that the prisoner who had tested Covid-19 had been arrested earlier this week on charges of theft, and was brought to the jail with six other people on June 1 after a local court sent them to judicial custody. FacebookTwitterTelegramEmail New Delhi, President Ram Nath Kovind has expressed concern over the air pollution in Delhi and neighbouring areas and said that days of smog sometimes give the feeling of doomsday scenario being fast forwarded. “Many scientists and futurologists have painted doomsday scenarios. On days of smog and poor visibility in our cities, we fear the future might already be here,” the President said while speaking at a meeting with IITians and other technical institutes in Rashtrapati Bhavan. “This is that time of the year when the air quality of the national capital as well as of many other cities worsens beyond all norms. We are facing a kind of challenge here that we have never faced before,” he added. The President said that hydrocarbon energy changed the face of the world in the last couple of centuries, but “now it is threatening our very existence”. He added that the challenge is compounded for nations battling to bring substantial sections of populations out of poverty. “Yet, we will have to find alternatives”, he said...

Washington, (Samajweekly) While scientists around the world are confined to their homes during the Covid-19 pandemic, NASA’s Earth-observing satellites continue to orbit and send back images that reveal connections between the pandemic and environment. “Satellites collect data all the time and don’t require us to go out anywhere,” said Hannah Kerner, an assistant research professor at the University of Maryland in the US. Kerner is among eight researchers recently awarded a rapid-turnaround project grant, which supports investigators as they explore how Covid-19 lockdown measures are impacting the environment and how the environment can affect how the virus is spread. The newest group of projects includes six that are looking to satellite images to help reveal how Covid-19 lockdown measures are impacting food security, fire ecology, urban surface heat, clouds and warming, air pollution and precipitation, water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Two projects are exploring how the environment could be impacting how the virus is spread by monitoring dust and weather. NASA’s Earth Science Division manages these projects that find new ways to use Earth-observing data to better understand regional-to-global environmental, economic, and societal impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) said, here on Thursday, around 100,000 jobs could be created in the agarbatti (incense stick) industry in the next 8-10 months after the Centre decided to increase import duty on bamboo sticks to 25 per cent from 10 per cent. It would strengthen the incense stick as well as the bamboo industries, said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena. The Finance Ministry recently increased import duty on bamboo sticks as part of the initiative taken by MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari aimed to discourage import and help local industry grow. Import of bamboo sticks from China and Vietnam had caused big employment losses. The rise in import duty will pave the way for new agarbatti manufacturing units to meet the ever growing domestic demand. The incense sticks’ domestic consumption is pegged at 1,490 tonnes a day. But only 760 tonnes a day is produced locally. The huge demand-supply gap led to large-scale import of raw incense sticks. “The import of raw incense sticks increased from just 2 per cent in 2009 to 80 per cent in 2019,” the KVIC said. In value terms, it increased from Rs 31 crore in 2009 to Rs 546 crore in 2019. The UPA government in 2011 had reduced import duty from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. It hit the domestic Indian incense sticks manufacturers hard, causing closure of nearly 25 per cent units, the KVIC said. The KVIC claimed on its request the Commerce Ministry on August 31, 2019 placed the incense stick import under “restricted” category. While it revived hundreds of units in various states, like Maharashtra, MP, UP, Gujarat and several N-E states, it also prompted traders to import round bamboo sticks. The import of bamboo sticks increased from Rs 210 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 370 crore in 2019-20...
