Congress raises pitch on PMC scam

New Delhi, The Congress has accused the BJP-led NDA government of not giving attention to PMC Bank scam in which three depositors have lost their lives. Party spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh said that Congress is challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce that the depositors of the PMC Bank will be able to withdraw money as per their convenience from tomorrow. The Congress is raising the PMC issue as Maharashtra goes to polls on October 21. The party is trying to capitalise on this issue in Mumbai which has about 36 seats in the state Assembly. The ruling coalition is strong in the suburbs as BJP is pitching its campaign on national issues. The issue of abrogation of Article 370 is BJP’s prime focus. Singh said rating agencies have downgraded India’s rating, more than 600 bank branch has been closed, 100 ATMs have also shut while alleging that “Modi has given more than Rs 6 lakh crore to his corporate friends”. The PMC Bank depositors on Wednesday also met the Mumbai Police Commissioner to apprise him of the situation. The case is to be heard in the Supreme Court on Thursday. Their plea seeks 100 per cent insurance protection to all 15 lakh depositors of the bank...

Railways ferried 60L people, recovered 15% operational costs

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Indian Railways has ferried over 60 lakh people in 4,450 Shramik Special trains since May 1, but managed to recover only 15 per cent of operational costs, said Railway Board Chairman V.K. Yadav, here on Monday. Speaking to reporters through a video link, Yadav said, “The average fare per person on Shramik Special trains was Rs 600 and we have operated 4,450 Shramik trains so far. The Railways generated a revenue of around Rs 360 crore.” The average fare for Shramik Special trains is Rs 600 per passenger. “One has to keep in mind that these are normal fares and not fares for special trains which are higher. We carried 60 lakh passengers, so the revenue can be calculated. We, however, managed to recover only 15 per cent of cost of operations,” the Chairman said. Yadav reiterated that the cost of operating these trains was being shared by the Centre and the states in a 85-15 per cent ratio. He also said that now very less people are stranded and the Railways along with the state governments will arrange for their return. He further said that the demand for Shramik Special trains had fallen in the last couple of days. Yadav said that he had written to the state governments on June 3 and received requests for 171 Shramik Special trains. “Between June 4 and June 14, we operated 222 Shramik special trains,” he said, and assured the states of providing trains within 24 hours of the request. Before May 25, the Railways was operating over 250 trains to ferry the stranded workers...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Lucknow, A day after Mohd Azam Khan’s brother-in-law Zameer Ahmad Khan said that the former was upset with his Samajwadi Party (SP) for not supporting him in his hour of crisis, the Congress has stepped in to corner the SP for ‘abandoning’ their leader. Uttar Pradesh Congress minority cell president Shahnawaz Alam has said that by not standing in support of Azam Khan, the SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has sent out clear signals about his future politics. “It is shameful that a leader who has given thirty years of his life to a party is being isolated in this manner. If the SP cannot stand behind one of its tallest leaders, then how can the party be expected to protect the minorities who are often implicated in false criminal cases?” The Congress now wants to project a pro-minority image by lashing out against the Samajwadi Party which, till now, had been considered a custodian of minorities, especially Muslims. Mohd Azam Khan’s brother-in-law Zameer Ahmed Khan had told reporters outside Sitapur jail on Monday that, “The SP MP is disturbed by the fact that the party did not stand by him when the state government started targeting him soon after BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh. It was only later that some senior leaders spoke about it.”..
