Washington, (Samajweekly) What astronomers thought was a planet beyond our solar system has now seemingly vanished from sight, suggesting that the exoplanet likely never existed. The object, called Fomalhaut b, was first announced in 2008, based on observations made by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in 2004 and 2006. It was clearly visible in several years of Hubble observations that revealed it was a moving dot. But data analysis of Hubble images taken in 2014 showed the object had vanished. A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggests that the Hubble was instead looking at an expanding cloud of very fine dust particles from two icy bodies that smashed into each other. Hubble came along too late to witness the suspected collision but may have captured its aftermath, said the study. The missing-in-action planet was last seen orbiting the star Fomalhaut, 25 light years away. “These collisions are exceedingly rare and so this is a big deal that we actually get to see evidence of one,” said Andras Gaspar, an assistant astronomer at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory and lead author of a research paper announcing the discovery...

New Delhi, To ensure safety of women in the public transport, number of marshals deployed in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses will be increased to around 13,000. “From tomorrow (Tuesday), marshals are being deployed in every bus for providing safety to women. These 13,000 marshals will also help sick people and deal with any other emergency situations. Delhi is the only state where marshals are being deployed for the safety of people,” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said here on Monday. Addressing newly recruited bus marshals at the Tyagraj Stadium, Kejriwal said he was assigning them with duty to ensure safe ride for women in buses. Make them comfortable in buses, he told marshals. The announcement has come a day before the rollout of the scheme to provide free ride to women in DTC and cluster buses. The move would help achieve government commitment towards boosting security of women in Delhi, he added. Recalling his ‘free-ride’ announcement made on the day of Raksha Bandhan, Kejriwal said he had gifted it to his sisters, which would ensure their safety...

Tehran, (Samajweekly) Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the recent US decision to end the sanctions waivers under the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal. The US move to end the remaining sanctions waivers under the landmark deal is a “violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231” which endorses the deal, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported. Iran will take necessary legal measures in case the US decision adversely affects Iran’s nuclear rights under the accord, internationally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), said Mousavi. US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo announced earlier in a statement the end of sanctions waivers covering nuclear projects in Iran including the Arak reactor conversion following a final, 60-day wind-down period...

Hong Kong, According to early results, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement has made unprecedented gains in the district council elections, media reports said on Monday. In the figures put out till now, pro-democracy candidates have won 278 seats as against pro-Beijing candidates 42. Hong Kong’s district councillors have little political power and mainly deal with local issues such as bus routes and rubbish collection. And as such they have never normally generated interest, however, these polls were the first time people could express at the ballot box their opinion on embattled Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s handling of the crisis, which was sparked by a now withdrawn extradition law. There was huge turnout even to witness the counting process. Outside the Yau Ma Tei North polling station, residents lined up and as the doors opened, they poured into the public viewing area, the BBC report said. It appeared they wanted to ensure that the process was fair and transparent. There were loud cheers of astonishment as one surprising result came in after another. Nobody imagined such a comprehensive wipeout, the report said. Despite fears the vote could be disrupted or cancelled over the unrest, it went ahead peacefully. A record 4.1 million people had registered to vote — more than half the population. And more than 2.9 million cast votes for the 452 seats available, a turnout of more than 71 per cent, as against 47 per cent in 2015...

London, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say that if no agreement on trade between the EU and UK can be reached by October 15 both sides should “accept that and move on”. Johnson will say completing the UK’s exit from the EU without a trade deal would still be a “good outcome”, the BBC reported. It comes after UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK is not “scared” of walking away. Another round of talks – the eighth – is due to begin on Tuesday. But on the eve of the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that the UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement made last year. The new bill would eliminate the legal force of arrangements over customs in Northern Ireland which had been designed to avoid a hard border with the Irish Republic. It would also override provisions on state aid – the financial assistance sometimes given by the government to companies. Government sources told the BBC that the legislation would be introduced this week, describing it as a “sensible fall-back option” in case negoiations break down. They said it was “not intended to derail the talks”, but a key EU diplomat told the BBC it was “a self-defeating strategy” that could lead to the trade talks unravelling altogether...

New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday left for Saudi Arabia on a day’s official visit during which the two sides will ink an agreement to set up the Strategic Partnership Council to elevate the India-Saudi ties to a new level. Modi will also attend the Plenary Session of the Third Future Investment Initiative Forum being held in Riyadh on Tuesday. “PM @narendramodi emplanes for Riyadh to participate in the 3rd @FIIKSA Forum on an invitation of HM @KingSalman. Coupled with a strong bilateral component, the visit will strengthen a relationship that goes back centuries,” tweeted MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar. During his visit, Modi will hold bilateral talks with the Saudi King and also hold talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on matters of bilateral cooperation as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest. “India and Saudi Arabia have enjoyed traditionally close and friendly relations. New Delhi, The US-made heavy-calibre Sig Sauer assault rifles are set to boost the combat lethality of Indian troops. The first batch of these rifles will be given to them this December. As per the deal signed in February by the Ministry of Defence with US arms major Sig Sauer, 72,400 rifles will be purchased at Rs 700 crore. These assault rifles will suit the army’s operational tactic of ‘shoot to kill’ instead of incapacitation’, according to defence experts. These weapons may give an upper hand to troops in insurgency-hit areas. Troops are at present dependent on the INSAS rifles and have to wait for indigenous mass production of AK-203 rifles of Russian origin, the experts say. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said, here last week, by the end of year the first batch of the Sig Sauer rifles would arrive in a dismantled state and would be provided to troops after being assembled in the country. The INSAS, designed by the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and produced by the state-run Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), was inducted into the army in 1994. But armed forces have not found the weapon reliable in terms of combat lethality, weight and sighting system...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Jerusalem, (Samajweekly) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the US will continue to ensure Israel’s military edge in the Middle East under any future weapons deals involving the United States and the United Arab Emirates. “The United States has a legal requirement with respect to qualitative military edge. We will continue to honour that,” Pompeo said on Monday while making joint statements in Jerusalem alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Xinhua news agency reported. Netanyahu said he was reassured on the issue by the state secretary. Pompeo said he hoped that other Arab countries would follow the United Arab Emirates and form diplomatic ties with Israel. “I am hopeful that we will see other Arab nations join in this,” Pompeo said. A US-brokered deal to normalize ties between Israel and the UAE was announced on August 13. Last week, local Israeli media reported that the White House is planning a “giant” sale of F-35 warplanes as part of the deal. Pompeo arrived in Israel on Monday, kick-starting his five-day trip to the region. He has meetings scheduled also with Israel’s Alternate Prime Minister and Defence Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi...
