AASU, AJYCP form panel as they look to make political entry

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) As the state gears up for the Assembly elections next year, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Wednesday set up a committee of eminent citizens to suggest the future course of action for the two organisations. Addressing a joint media conference here, AASU and AJYCP leaders announced an 18-member “Assam Advisory Committee” to formulate clear-cut policy on academic, social, economic and political in order to defend the future of the indigenous people and genuine citizens of the state. The AASU and AJYCP’s joint announcement comes a week after the influential student body (AASU), which was a part of the Central government’s high-level committee on Clause 6 of Assam Accord, released the “confidential” report, claiming that the people has the right to know the contents after more than five months of submitting it officially. The student bodies claimed that the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had lost its regional characteristics and original mandate despite the fact that the organisation (AGP) was born out of the six-year-long Assam Agitation. “Sacrificing Assam’s interest, the AGP has joined hands with BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). To serve the indigenous people of the state, AASU and AJYCP approached some prominent citizens of Assam and they agreed to become a part of the committee,” AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath told the reporters. The AASU and AJYCP formed committee members include eminent litterateur and former Rajya Sabha member Nagen Saikia, Padma Shree awardee and writer-journalist Arup Kumar Dutta, former Meghalaya governor and BSF Director General Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary, National Award-winning filmmaker Jahnu Barua, environmentalist and former Gauhati University professor Krishnagopal Bhattacharya and former professor of Handique Girls’ College Basanta Deka...

Global Covid-19 cases top 22.5mn: Johns Hopkins

Washington, (Samajweekly) The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 22.5 million, while the deaths have increased to over 792,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University. As of Friday morning, the total number of cases stood at 22,593,363 and the fatalities rose to 792,396, the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update. The US accounted for the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 5,573,501 and 173,114, respectively, according to the CSSE. Brazil came in the second place with 3,501,975 infections and 112,304 deaths. In terms of cases, India ranks third (2,836,925), and is followed by Russia (939,833), South Africa (599,940), Peru (558,420), Mexico (543,806), Colombia (502,178), Chile (391,849), Spain (377,906), Iran (352,558), the UK (324,196), Argentina (320,884), Saudi Arabia (303,973), Pakistan (290,958), Bangladesh (287,959), France (256,534), Italy (256,118), Turkey (254,520), Germany (231,292), Iraq (192,797), Philippines (178,022), Indonesia (147,211), Canada (125,625), Qatar (116,224), Ecuador (105,508), Bolivia (105,050), Kazakhstan (103,815) and Ukraine (100,810), the CSSE figures showed. Taliban frees 36 Afghan detainees

However, Mohammad Shuaib Sabit, the governor for Farah province asserted that some of the released persons were civilians, reports Xinhua news agency. The exchange of prisoners is part of the US-Taliban peace deal that was inked in Doha on February 29 to facilitate the intra-Afghan dialogue for finding a political solution to Afghanistan’s prolonged war and withdrawal of the US-led forces from the country. Under the agreement, the Afghan government has to release 5,000 Taliban prisoners for the exchange of 1,000 security forces languishing in Taliban custody. So far, the government has released 2,700 Taliban detainees, while the Taliban has freed over 420 prisoners, 73 of them during the last few days from Balkh, Logar, Kunduz, Paktia, Paktika and Khost provinces...

Touching 9K cases a day, COVID tally crosses 2L in India

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) India witnessed closed to 9,000 new cases on Wednesday as the total case count of coronavirus mounted to 2,07,615, the Health Ministry data revealed. With 8,909 new cases and 217 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, India is now poised at the seventh place on the world tally table with just 25,000 cases behind Italy. Of the total cases 1,01,497 are active and 1,00,303 have been cured and discharged while 5,815 have died from the disease. The recovery rate in the country stood at 48.31 per cent while the fatality rate docked at 2.8 per cent. Maharashtra reported a total of 72,300 cases so far — almost 50,000 more than Tamil Nadu with 24,586 and Delhi 22,132. Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of casualties — 2,465, followed by Gujarat (1,092), Delhi (556) and Madhya Pradesh (364). States that have reported more than 5,000 cases are Madhya Pradesh (8,420), Rajasthan (9,373), Uttar Pradesh (8,361) and West Bengal (6,168). The Health Ministry on Tuesday said that India is far from COVID peak. ICMR official Nivedita Gupta, addressing a press conference, said: “We are very far away from the peak. Our preventive measures to curb the disease are very effective and we are better positioned in comparison with other countries. You will get to see the data in a week.”..
