Islamabad, Ahead of a verdict in the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan’s ruling party has raised questions about impartiality of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd.) Sardar Muhammad Raza. Raza is likely to issue a verdict in the foreign funding case before his retirement on December 6. Melbourne, (Samajweekly) Australia’s Victoria state, the worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has extended a strict Covid-19 lockdown by another two weeks, as infection numbers had not fallen enough to ease restrictions. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that stage 4 restrictions would remain in place until September 28, with only a slight easing until October, reports Xinhua news agency. Andrews said that despite the impact of the lockdowns on Victoria and the state’s economy, modelling had clearly shown that to reopen prematurely would lead to a rapid increase in case numbers. “There is only one option and that is to do this in a series of steady and safe steps. You can’t run out of lockdown. Because all you are doing is running into a third wave and we’ll all be locked up again,” Andrews said. Victoria has been at the centre of Australia’s second wave of Covid-19 infections, recording close to 20,000 of the country’s 26,279 total cases, as well as roughly 90 per cent of deaths, which on Monday topped 800. Tehran, (Samajweekly) Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the recent US decision to end the sanctions waivers under the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal. Johnson sets Oct 15 deadline for EU trade deal

London, (Samajweekly) Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say that if no agreement on trade between the EU and UK can be reached by October 15 both sides should “accept that and move on”. Johnson will say completing the UK’s exit from the EU without a trade deal would still be a “good outcome”, the BBC reported. It comes after UK chief negotiator David Frost said the UK is not “scared” of walking away. Another round of talks – the eighth – is due to begin on Tuesday. But on the eve of the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that the UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement made last year. The new bill would eliminate the legal force of arrangements over customs in Northern Ireland which had been designed to avoid a hard border with the Irish Republic. It would also override provisions on state aid – the financial assistance sometimes given by the government to companies. Government sources told the BBC that the legislation would be introduced this week, describing it as a “sensible fall-back option” in case negoiations break down. They said it was “not intended to derail the talks”, but a key EU diplomat told the BBC it was “a self-defeating strategy” that could lead to the trade talks unravelling altogether...

Guwahati Central Jail becomes Assam’s new containment zone

Guwahati, (Samajweekly) The Guwahati Central Jail was on Friday declared as containment zone after a jail inmate tested coronavirus positive, an official said. Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu, in a notification declared the jail premises as “containment zone” after the detection of the case. “Any unauthorised entry or exit and movement of any vehicle have been barred till the area is declared safe as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,” said Pegu, also the chairman of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Disaster Management Authority. Jail sources said that the prisoner who had tested Covid-19 had been arrested earlier this week on charges of theft, and was brought to the jail with six other people on June 1 after a local court sent them to judicial custody. The Guwahati Central Jail currently has 1,118 inmates against its capacity of housing 1,000. Assam has six Central jails, 22 district jails, one open air jail, one special jail, one sub-jail and six detention centres for “declared foreigners”. “With 38 new cases, Assam’s Covid-19 count climbed to 2,153 on Friday night, with active cases at 1,637,” state Health Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma said...

The new case take the state’s tally to 4,835. “New cases reported from Thursday 5 p.m. to Friday 5 p.m., 515,” said a health official. On Friday, cases spiked in Udupi, Kalaburagi, Bengaluru Urban, Yadgir, Mandya, Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Bengaluru Rural. Udupi saw a record 204 cases in the past 24 hours, followed by Yadgir (74), Vijayapura (53), Kalaburagi (42), Bidar (39), Belagavi (36), Mandya (13), Bengaluru Rural (12), Bengaluru Urban (10), Dakshaina Kannada (8), Uttara Kannada (7), Hassan, Dharwad and Chikkaballapura (3 each), Haveri and Ramanagara (2 each) and Davangere, Bagalkote, Ballari and Kolar (1 each). Raichur did not record a case and Hassan only three. Of the new cases, 363 were men and 152 were women. On a positive note, 83 people got discharged in the past 24 hours.
