New Delhi, Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, who has lost 7.5 kg — from 73.5 kg to 66 kg — since his arrest on August 21, was taken to the hospital four-times while in custody. According to sources, Chidambaram, 74, is suffering from Crohn’s disease, which causes inflammation in the digestive tract and can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition. The former Minister could not get accustomed to foods served in Tihar Jail and complained of losing weight in the custody. After considering his health conditions and several requests, a Delhi court on October 3 allowed him home-cooked food once a day. His deteriorating condition was visible during the court’s proceedings too. On the very first day of remand hearing on August 22, Chidambaram had refused the judge’s offer of a chair to sit during the proceedings. But later he was seen sitting during other proceedings...

New Delhi, Citing the gang-rape and murder of a 27-year-old veterinarian in Hyderabad and the subsequent killing of all the four accused in a police ‘encounter’, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) R.M. Lodha said on Tuesday that while we are celebrating the Human Rights Day, the fact of the matter is that we are struggling to protect human rights. “Are we heading towards a society of lawlessness? Has the rule of law run its course? What happened to the constitutional rights and procedural safeguards,” asked Lodha while speaking at an event to mark Human Rights Day organised by the International Institute of Human Rights here. “People are going back to the 17th century Hammurabi’s code of laws: Eye for eye, tooth for tooth and nail for nail,” he added. Supreme Court judge Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who was also present at the event, cited the Unnao rape survivor lying burnt on the road and the scene of dead bodies of the alleged accused in the Hyderabad case to present two facets of the country...

New Delhi, A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted expelled BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother and acquitted four others in a case pertaining to alleged custodial death of father of a girl who he raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district three years ago. While pronouncing the judgement, District Judge Dharmesh Sharma observed that the case shows how strings are pulled when a powerful person is involved. “It shows how our system works,” he said. Senger has been convicted under Section 304 part 2 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which pertains to act done knowing it may cause death, but without any intention to cause death. “Sengar had no intention of killing rape victim’s father. He was beaten in a brutal manner that led to his death,” the court said. The judge further stated, “Police officer should have intervened and tried to save the person. There was gross medical negligence. Doctors acted like butchers.” “As there were eighteen injuries on his body but you took him to police station and implicated him in a false case,” the judge further said. The case pertains the death of rape survivor’s father in custody on April 9, 2018...

Chandigarh, The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Sunday demanded an inquiry by a central agency or a sitting judge of the high court into the Rs 1,000 crore extortion racket being run by gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpur and his associates under the patronage of Punjab Jails Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa. SAD leaders Bikram Singh Majithia and Daljit Singh Cheema demanded that Randhawa should be booked and arrested for extending patronage to Congressmen who brutally murdered former Akali sarpanch Dalbir Dhilwan, besides investigating the role of Bhagwanpur in the murder and the extortion racket being run by him from the jail. The SAD leaders said a central inquiry by the CBI or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or even by a sitting judge of the high court could alone expose the minister-gangster-police nexus in the murder of Dhilwan and the extortion racket. Majithia said it had been seven days since Dhilwan was murdered but his killers were still at large. “This is all because of the influence of Sukhjinder Randhawa who is giving shelter to the killers. If the police is serious about arresting the assailants, it should search the residence of the minister as well as his close associates,” Majithia said...

Washington, (Samajweekly) The Trump administration is making a last-ditch effort to stop the publication of a damaging new book by a former national security adviser. Among several allegations, John Bolton said Donald Trump “pleaded” for help from China to win re-election in 2020. The Justice Department has filed an emergency order seeking to block the release on national security grounds, the BBC reported. Constitutional experts said the move is unlikely to succeed and US media have already published extracts. The new work – The Room Where It Happened – is due to go on sale on 23 June. In it, John Bolton paints a picture of a president whose decision-making was dominated by a desire to win the presidency again. Many of the allegations are based on private conversations and are impossible to verify. The Trump administration has pushed back against Bolton, with the president saying the book was “made up of lies and fake stories”. “Many of the ridiculous statements he attributes to me were never made, pure fiction,” Trump tweeted on Thursday, adding: “Just trying to get even for firing him like the sick puppy he is!” Despite this, Bolton’s book has been keenly anticipated, given his formerly high-ranking status as the president’s top adviser on security matters. Late on Wednesday, the Justice Department asked a judge for a hearing on Friday to stop the book’s release...

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Friday accused hospitals and medical practitioners of extorting money from patients. In her address at the King George Medical University’s 15th convocation ceremony, Patel said: “The Centre and state government spend a lot of money on hospitals. Even then hospitals are extorting money from patients. New doctors must pledge they won’t indulge in wrong practices, no matter they practise in government or private hospitals. “I have visited many hospitals. The patients are suffering due to poor management. The medical equipment, even thermometers keep lying in doctors’ rooms.” “Doctors, be humble,” she urged. During the ceremony, she asked doctors not to seek dowries even if they are gold medallists. Patel also urged the doctors to run a campaign to stop child marriages and dowry. During the event, Patel awarded medals and degrees to meritorious students...

New Delhi, As the five-judge Constitution bench on Wednesday agreed to bring the Chief Justice of India under the ambit of Right To Information Act (RTI), one of the judges Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud pitched for making criteria for appointments in public domain as it will fulfil the purpose of the Right To Information Act. Justice Chandrachud in a separate concurring judgement said the collegium is a victim of its own birth pangs. He also opined that there is a vital public interest in disclosing the basis on which those with judicial experience are evaluated for elevation to higher judicial office, particularly having regard to merit, integrity and judicial performance. “Placing the criteria followed in making judicial appointments in public domain will fulfil the purpose and mandate of Section 4 of the Right To Information At (RTI) Act, engender public confidence in the process and provide a safeguard against extraneous considerations entering into the process,” Justice Chandrachud said...
