Para commandos begin final assault on holed up terrorists in J&K

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Security forces including para commandos started the ‘first light intervention’ on Sunday to flush out the holed up terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district where a standoff had been going on between the holed up terrorists and the security forces since midnight. “Firing exchanges had stopped around 12 a.m. today and since three army soldiers and two local policemen are also inside the house which the terrorists are using as a fortified bunker, room intervention by the para commandos is being carried out with utmost caution,” a top intelligence officer told IANS. Sources also told IANS that there has been no contact with the security personnel yet who had entered the house to sort out the terrorists without causing any collateral damage to civilian life and property. Merkel won’t attend G7 summit in Washington

Berlin, (Samajweekly) German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not attend the G7 summit in Washington due to the coronavirus pandemic, state media reported Saturday, citing government spokesperson Steffen Seibert. US President Donald Trump said on May 20 that he was aiming for a real G7 summit in Washington in late June as a sign of normalization, reports Xinhua news agency. The summit was originally scheduled for June 10-12 at the presidential retreat of Camp David, Maryland. In March, however, the US government cancelled the arrangement because of the pandemic and scheduled a video conference instead. Merkel had initially left open whether she would accept Trump’s invitation to participate in a video conference. In whatever form this meeting takes place, “whether as a video conference or otherwise, I will definitely fight for multilateralism. That is very clear, both in the G7 and the G20”, the Chancellor said on May 20. Camp David is the country retreat for the US President, some 68 miles from Washington D.C...

London,(Samajweekly) The United Kingdom government has given the green light for sport in the country to return from June 1 behind closed doors. The development comes as a boost for the lucrative English cricket and football competitions in particular who have all been looking for a restart within the next two months. “The wait is over. Live British sport will shortly be back on in safe and carefully controlled environments,” said British Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden in a document published by Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Strict guidelines were also published in the document which included a ban on spectators and an insistence on adhering to social distancing norms as far as possible. “This guidance provides the safe framework for sports to resume competitions behind closed doors. Fresh spurt in corona cases in Bhopal and Indore

In the first four days of June, Bhopal overtook Indore in terms of new cases of corona patients. To Indore’s 147, Bhopal reported 163 coronavirus cases. The figures for the corresponding period last month were Bhopal 55, and Indore 125. Friday’s figures changed the picture with 55 patients testing positive in Indore against Bhopal’s 51. The two major cities have shown that they cannot handle a crisis without enough discipline. Neemuch appeared on the corona map of the state with five cases in the first week of May and recorded a big pike in the past couple of weeks. With 38 cases reported on Friday, Neemuch has logged 290 so far. The state reported 234 fresh cases on Friday just as the administration claimed to have checked the spread of the virus. The health department bulletin issued on Friday reported nearly 150 cases from Indore, Bhopal and Neemuch. The police administration and the health department have some embarrassing questions to answer over the fresh spurt of cases in Indore and Bhopal. The major hotspot in Indore was Khajrana where more than 200 patients were found positive in the past four days. Bhopal has more than a dozen such hotspots, where the number of patients has increased rapidly. This includes Jehangirabad, Aishbagh, Mangalwara, Banganga, Kotra Sultanabad, Qazi Camp, Idgah Hills and other areas. The causes for the rapid rise in numbers in Bhopal are: People not following safe physical distancing, are moving without masks, and lack of sanitation in slums where houses are built above big gutters in narrow lanes with people constantly contacting each other...

Jaipur, (Samajweekly) After the resolution of the crisis arising out of rebellion by Congress MLAs owing allegiance to Sachin Pilot, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday said that he would try to know their grievances and then try to win them over. Gehlot was speaking to the media before leaving for Jaisalmer, where MLAs from his camp are staying, to chair a Congress Legislature Party meeting. “As the Chief Minister, it is my responsibility to win the hearts of my MLAs if they have any cause to be annoyed with me. We will try to figure out what all promises were made to them and why they have grudges,” he said. Gehlot pointed out that a 3-member committee has been formed by the Congress high command to look into the grievances of MLAs.
