54 nominations rejected for Karnataka by-elections

Bengaluru, The Chief Electoral Officer rejected 54 nominations filed by 30 candidates for the 15 Karnataka Assembly by-elections, scheduled on December 5, after a day-long scrutiny of 355 candidatures received till Monday, an official said here on Tuesday. “In all, 301 nominations have been accepted,” a poll official told IANS. Of the 248 candidates, 218 nominations, including 125 Independents, were found valid. The candidates, include 15 each of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress and 14 of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), which is not contesting the Hoskote seat in the Bengaluru rural district. Other contestants include one of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for the Vijayangara seat and two of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for Chikkaballapura and Hunsur seats. The last date of withdrawal is November 21. The votes will be counted on December 9...

New Delhi, High Drama erupted in Bhopal and Gurugram after eight MLAs, including four Congress, two Bahujan Samaj Party, one Samajwadi Party and one independent, went missing from the state and were tracked in Gurugram by Congress senior leader Digvijaya Singh. In a late night ‘rescue’ operation headed by former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh, one of the MLAs was brought back. Around 2 a.m., Congress leaders Jitu Patwari and Digvijaya Singh’s son Jai Vardhan Singh, both ministers in the Kamal Nath government, reached a luxury hotel in Haryana and brought back suspended BSP MLA Ramabai. Sources say contact was also established with Congress MLA Bishulal Singh, but so far he has not returned. Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh said, “When we got to know about this, we tried to get back the MLAs and Ramabai has come back while others want to come, but the BJP is trying to stop the MLAs.” The development comes a day after Digvijaya Singh accused the BJP of poaching its party Legislators to topple the Congress government in the state. Thousands turn ‘Tribals’ in UP to usurp ST job quota

New Delhi, Several thousand government jobs, under the reserved quota, were usurped in Uttar Pradesh, in connivance with local administration officials including the District Magistrates. In several instances, which have come to light now, candidates of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) converted themselves into Scheduled Tribes to exploit the quota under ST category. The racket flourished in UP during the rule of Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which dominated politics in India’s largest state in the last two decades. Concerned with the misuse of reservation quota, UP Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) Commission chief, Brij Lal, has finally instructed the District Magistrates to verify ST certificates of three major Scheduled Tribes – Kharwar, Gond and Chero. Speaking to IANS, Brij Lal said that he received several complaints wherein members of the OBCs falsely procured certificates to declare themselves as SC or ST candidates. “Obviously the objective was to avail the quota in different sectors and regions. At this moment, I can’t rule out the involvement of DMs who are empowered to issue SC/ST certificates. I cannot predict the exact numbers of such cases, but it seems to run into thousands, considering the long period of time. On Monday, I held a meeting with top government officials in Gorakhpur and have instructed them to probe the racket,” said the former IPS officer who was also UP’s former Director General of Police (DGP)...

New Delhi, The BJP on Thursday established a substantial lead as the counting of votes for Assembly elections progressed in Maharashtra and Haryana. In Maharashtra, the BJP was leading at 83 seats and its ally Shiv Sena was ahead at 53 in the 288-member Assembly, according to IANS-CVoter. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was leading at 30 seats and its coalition partner Congress was ahead at 21 seats. Kamal Nath calls for legislative party meet

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Friday called for a legislative party meeting at his residence ahead of the floor test in the state Assembly. On Thursday, the Supreme Court had ordered a floor test for the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in the state and asked to complete the proceedings before 5 p.m. State Public Relations Minister P.C. Sharma said that a legislative party meeting has been called by the Chief Minister at 10.30 a.m. on Friday. Sharma also claimed that the Kamal Nath-led government will successfully prove the majority. The Assembly Secretariat has called a session at 2 p.m. on Friday on the orders of the Supreme Court. The agenda was declared by the Secretariat late on Thursday night. Kamal Nath has also called a press conference at 12 noon on Friday ahead of the Assembly session where he is expected to make an important announcement. Both the BJP and the Congress have issued whip to their legislators. The current situation of the Assembly seems to be in BJP’s favour as the resignations of 16 rebel Congress MLAs was accepted by Speaker Narmada Prasad Prajapati on Thursday.
