Hong Kong polls: Pro-democracy groups make big gains

Hong Kong, According to early results, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement has made unprecedented gains in the district council elections, media reports said on Monday. In the figures put out till now, pro-democracy candidates have won 278 seats as against pro-Beijing candidates 42. Hong Kong’s district councillors have little political power and mainly deal with local issues such as bus routes and rubbish collection. And as such they have never normally generated interest, however, these polls were the first time people could express at the ballot box their opinion on embattled Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s handling of the crisis, which was sparked by a now withdrawn extradition law. There was huge turnout even to witness the counting process. Outside the Yau Ma Tei North polling station, residents lined up and as the doors opened, they poured into the public viewing area, the BBC report said. It appeared they wanted to ensure that the process was fair and transparent.There were loud cheers of astonishment as one surprising result came in after another. Nobody imagined such a comprehensive wipeout, the report said. Despite fears the vote could be disrupted or cancelled over the unrest, it went ahead peacefully. A record 4.1 million people had registered to vote — more than half the population. And more than 2.9 million cast votes for the 452 seats available, a turnout of more than 71 per cent, as against 47 per cent in 2015...

Extreme risk aversion to have adverse outcomes: RBI Guv

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint New Delhi, (Samajweekly) As the economy reels under the pandemic and post lockdown woes, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das is of the view that extreme risk aversion by financial institutions will have adverse outcomes for all. Noting that India’s financial system remains sound, Das, in his foreword to the RBI’s latest Financial Stability Report, wrote that in the current environment, the need for financial intermediaries to proactively augment capital and improve their resilience has acquired top priority. “In the evolving milieu, while risk management has to be prudent, extreme risk aversion would have adverse outcomes for all,” he wrote. The Governor’s statement gains significance as concerns have been raised that banks are still risk averse and are largely shying away from lending in general, except for the sovereign guaranteed ECLGS loans for MSMEs. The Financial Stability Report for July 2020 also shows that bank credit, which had considerably weakened during the first half of 2019-20, slid down further in the subsequent period with the moderation becoming broad-based across bank groups. “Subdued bank credit shows clear signs of risk aversion,” the report said. The Governor also said that currently there is growing disconnect between the movements in certain segments of financial markets and real sector activity. Hong Kong lifts cruise ship quarantine

Hong Kong, Hong Kong authorities have allowed over 3,600 passengers that were forced into quarantine for five days on the World Dream cruise ship over coronavirus fears, to disembark. Half of the travellers have passed “numerous medical tests” and temperature controls, and all the tests carried out on the ship’s 1,814 crew members have come back negative for coronavirus, Efe news reported citing the Hong Kong Health Department as saying on Sunday. “As all quarantine measures carried out by the Department of Health have been completed, all passengers and crew members can leave the cruise,” Leung Yiu-hong, chief port health officer at the Centre for Health Protection, said at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Sunday. The ship has been in quarantine since February 5 after it became known that crew members were in contact with eight Chinese people infected with the deadly novel coronavirus on the cruise trip...

Maha reports new high of 178 Covid-deaths, 5,071 patients cured

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Mumbai, (Samajweekly) Maharashtra notched a new high of 178 Covid-19 deaths on Monday, sending the state toll zooming past the 4,000 mark, while the second-highest number of cured patients were discharged. The state also recorded 2,786 new patients, taking the total of 110,744, but a stupendous recovery rate of 50.61 per cent. This means over half of the patients who are infected are recovering fully and returning home, said an official. Monday’s toll was 24 higher that the previous high of 152 on June 11, while number of cases was 821 less than the highest of 3,607 on May 11 to rest at 2,786. For most of June, the state has been recording three-digit highs – 103 deaths on June 2, 122 on June 3, 123 on June 4, 139 on June 5, 120 on June 6, 109 on June 8, 120 on June 9, 149 on June 10, 152 on June 11, 127 on June 12, 113 on June 13, and 120 on June 14. Monday’s figures work out to roughly one death every 8 minutes, and a whopping 116 new cases notched every hour. With the latest fatalities, the state death toll zoomed past 4,000 to touch 4,128 while the total number of Coronavirus patients catapulted to 110,744 — both highest in the country. The Health Department said of the total number of cases declared till date, 50,554 were active cases. Despite the gloomy data on the perpetually growing number of Covid-19 deaths and cases, the state continues to record an impressive recovery rate, standing today at 50.61 per cent and a mortality rate of 3.70 per cent...
