Bhopal, (Samajweekly) The Congress seems content with the sole Rajya Sabha seat that it will bag through Saturday’s poll. It has asked its legislators to commit 54 of their first preference votes to Digivjaya Singh and thus sacrifice Phool Singh Baraiya, the second candidate. Digvijaya Singh is seeking a re-entry to the Upper House. He needs 52 MLAs’ support. The Congress has 92 MLAs. The Congress was once well-placed to send two of the three candidates to the Upper House. It will now watch its former star Jyotiraditya Scindia win as a BJP candidate along with a rank outsider Sumer Singh Solanki. The BJP hopes to make a political capital from the easy passage of Digvijaya Singh. Phool Siingh Baraiya, the second candidate of Congress, might secure 38 of the 40 Congress votes and might end up as a loser. Baraiya is a popular Daalit leader from the Chambal-Gwalior region. With two additional votes committed to Digvijay Singh, Baraiya would need 14 additional votes and hope for some votes being rejected. After Scindia’s rebellion, Baraiya was nominated to influence the 16 seats that will witness by-elections in the Chambal-Gwalior region. The BJP will now turn it into a campaign issue saying the Congress propped up an upper caste candidate at the expense of a Dalit leader...

New Delhi,(Samajweekly) Amid the buzz of a cabinet reshuffle in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath in a letter to Modi has said that he hopes the defectors will be not be given a place in the cabinet and asked him to save the democratic values. The letter is an indirect attack on BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, who took oath as Rajya Sabha MP on Wednesday, and is likely to be inducted in the Union Cabinet after he led a successful revolt against Kamal Nath, which led to the fall of the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh. Attacking the Central government, Kamal Nath said, “It’s not a matter of the Congress government only, but the whole democratic setup has been shaken. There is a kind of earthquake in the democratic setup and I doubt that at the centre of this is the Centre (Union government). I hope my doubts are baseless.” He further alleged that there is always an attempt to destabilise the government through unfair means wherever the opposition is in power. On Thursday, another Congress MLA resigned from the party, dashing the hopes of Congress of making a comeback in the state after the by-elections. The Congress is facing a similar revolt in Rajasthan where 18 MLAs along with former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot have rebelled and the matter is pending at the Rajasthan High Court...

New Delhi, The Congress is set to lose its strength in the Rajya Sabha as 55 seats go to the polls next month and hectic lobbying has begun within the party for nominations. The Congress has 46 seats in the Upper House and is likely to retain only 13 seats of the total. The party is going to get two seats each in MP, Chhatisgarh and Rajasthan, while one each in Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra. The party is eyeing one seat each in Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu with the help of allies while another seat in Maharashtra. The current strength of UPA is 62 while NDA is 114. The Congress is weighing options to send Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to the Upper House through the elections to be held in April this year. If sources are to be believed, the party General Secretary is likely to be sent in the Rajya Sabha from Chhatisgarh. While more young leaders are also considered for a slot in the Upper House, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, who lost his seat from Guna in the general elections, top Rahul Gandhi aides Milind Deora and Rajiv Satavin could find place from Maharashtra, while Jitin Prasada may be inducted from Bihar, a seat which RJD could concede to the Congress...
