UP corona count touches 257, 98 are Jamaatis

Lucknow, (Samajweekly) With 75 more people being confirmed positive for the Coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours, the total number of Corona cases in the state has risen to 257. Of the total cases, at least 98 are linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi. The state’s count on Friday was 177 and two people — one each in Basti and Meerut — have died. According to Principal Secretary (Medical and Health) Amit Mohan Prasad, there has been a steep rise in the cases in the past two days, primarily because of a number of those linked to the Tablighi Jamaat testing positive. Cases have been reported from Agra, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Varanasi, Shamli, Baghpat, Ghazipur, Pratapgarh, Saharanpur, Banda, Maharajganj, Hathras and Mirzapur on Saturday. The overall district-wise tally since the coronavirus crisis began is — Gautam Buddha Nagar (58), Agra (44), Meerut (25), Ghaziabad (14), Saharanpur (13), Lucknow (10), Kanpur (7), Bareilly, Shamli and Maharajganj (6 each), Basti, Varanasi (5 each), Firozabad and Hathras (4 each), Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Bulandshahr, Pratapgarh (3 each), Pilibhit, Mirzapur, Baghpat (2 each), Shahjahanpur Hardoi, Hapur, Moradabad, Lakhimpur Kheri and Banda (1 each). Lucknow, As the countdown for the Supreme Court verdict begins, the law enforcing agencies in Uttar Pradesh are also getting battle ready. Police vehicles are being repaired, the armoury is being re-visited to ensure that there are no last-minute glitches and even the public address system is being tested. “It is important for us that vehicles and the public address system are in perfect order in places that are communally sensitive. This would not just help in countering rumours and also help in crowd control. Rumours and uncontrolled mobs can play havoc in a situation, where mass sentiment is involved,” said a senior police officer. The Police headquarters has already issued directions to police chiefs in the 34 communally sensitive districts including Meerut, Agra, Aligarh, Rampur, Bareilly, Ferozabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Bulandshahr and Azamgarh. Underlining the importance of the public address systems in policing, former deputy general of police (DGP) Brjlal recalled, “Two days after the Babri Masjid demolition, a subordinate informed me that a rumour of my murder was being circulated in Meerut and tension was building up. I was SSP Meerut then. I took to the public address system and cleared the air. Today with WhatsApp and SMS, such rumours can fly at an alarming speed.”..

Court dismisses Shahrukh Pathan’s bail plea

The 23-year-old was nabbed on March 3 from Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district after he was caught on camera waving a gun at unarmed Delhi Police head constable Deepak Dahiya during the tensions in February. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjeev Kumar Malhotra stated, “I am not inclined to grant bail to the accused. Bail application accordingly stands dismissed.” The court also noted that the right to protest is a fundamental right in a democracy, but this right of peaceful protest and open criticism of government policies does not extend to disturbing the public order. During the course of proceedings, Special Public Prosecutor D.K. Bhatia told the court that it is still investigating his role in connection with the conspiracy of the riots, adding that he led the violent mob in the area. Advocate Asghar Khan, who represented the accused, told the court that the incident occurred in the spur of the moment. Khan sought his bail on the grounds that he had clean antecedents and the chargesheet has already been filed in the case. He cited Shaheen Bagh shooter Kapil Baisala’s cases who was granted bail in the case.
