Ukraine, Iran begin negotiations on compensation for plane crash

Kiev, (Samajweekly) Ukraine began negotiations with an Iranian delegation on compensation for the plane of Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), which was shot down near Tehran earlier this year, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Facebook. “Today in Kiev, Iranian delegation started the negotiations on compensation for Iran’s shooting down of the Ukrainian International Airlines PS752 flight. We have been striving for a long time to start the negotiation process, and I welcome the beginning of negotiations,” said the diplomat on Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported. Kuleba noted that the process would not be easy, but Ukraine will do everything to achieve maximum compensation for the relatives of the victims of the plane crash. The Boeing-737, en route from Tehran to Kiev, was shot down by two rockets shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport on Jan. 8. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of all 167 passengers and nine crew members on board, who were citizens of Ukraine, Iran, Canada, Sweden, Afghanistan, and the United Kingdom. Later, Iran’s armed forces confirmed that an “unintentional” launch of a military missile by the country was the cause of the incident. The transcript of the black boxes from the plane confirmed the fact of illegal interference with the plane. New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The carrying of ‘tazias’ at Muharram in Delhi has been undertaken since medieval times but this will be the first time for 700 years that processions will not be carried out, said Syed Kashif Nizami, the custodian of the revered Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya shrine. “Even during the Partition in 1947, there was no ban on ‘tazia’ processions in the dargah, but this time due to the corona pandemic, Delhi and the Central government have not allowed processions to be held in a mass religious programme.” “For more than 700 years, the largest ‘tazia’, decorated with flowers, is kept in the Imambara, which is at a small distance from the dargah. More than four ‘tazias’ decorated with flowers are kept here.” On the 10th day of Muharram, which marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet at Iraq’s Karbala in 681 A.D, a procession with mourners carrying daggers and knives is carried out from the dargah and the blood oozing out of their self-inflicted wounds is reminiscent of the tragedy. However, this time around, all such activities have been banned due to the pandemic. So this time only ‘tazias’ decorated with flowers will be sent to Karbala in the capital. Gauhar Asghar Kasmi, a member of Shah-e-Mardan Dargah and Anjuman Karbala Committee at Aliganj Jorbagh in Delhi, said: “Every year, the ‘majlis’ starts from the first day of Muharram. Tazias are also kept at many places. On the 10th day of Muharram, processions reach here with nearly 70 large tazias. Tazias are buried here. A procession of mourners beating their chests take to the streets on Teej, the 12th day of mourning. ‘Majlis’ are being organised this year only in the Imambaras. People are allowed to participate in the Majlis with observance of social distancing norms.”..

Protests against the newly-enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) had turned violent on December 15 near Delhi’s Jamia Nagar. Several buses were set on fire during the violence in which police and protesters sustained injuries. Sharjeel was arrested on Monday in connection with the case and then sent to one-day police custody. He was produced before the court on Tuesday at the end of his remand period. The Delhi police have named him as an instigator in the chargesheet filed in the case. He was also slapped with a sedition case last month for allegedly making inflammatory speeches against the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). He is accused of mobilising students and is currently in judicial custody in connection with the case. In a purported video, Imam was seen talking about splitting the northeast region from India to block the implementation of the NRC...

There were three more deaths confirmed by the authorities earlier in the day. More than 370 people have been shifted to hospitals, 100 among them were in critical condition. Deputy Inspector General of Police of South Karachi Sharjeel Kharal on Monday told media that the gas leaked when workers were unloading a chemical loaded container from a ship docked at the Kemari area of the Karachi port, the Xinhua news agency reported. Over 150 others complaining of breathing difficulties have been rushed to the hospital over the last 24 hours. Shah’s directives came during an emergency meeting at his house after he visited the affected areas, according to his spokesperson, Rasheed Channa, Dawn reported. “The smell is spreading with the wind,” said Shah, while issuing directives to shift residents of the affected areas to marriage halls located in the nearest safe area. New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Special Cell of Delhi police arrested JNU PhD scholar Sharjeel Imam in connection with the February Northeast Delhi riots. He has been booked on the charges of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). On Sunday, he was brought back to Delhi from Assam on the production warrant. On July 21, the Delhi police was scheduled to bring him to the national capital but just ahead of his departure for Delhi, Imam tested positive for COVID-19. Imam is an accused in a case related to alleged inflammatory speeches during the protests against CAA and NRC and was currently lodged in Guwahati jail in a case related to UAPA registered by the Assam police. Delhi Police on July 25 had filed a chargesheet against Imam in connection with a case related to his alleged inflammatory speeches during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at several places. The 600-page charge sheet was filed, under section 124A (Sedition), 153(A) (Promoting enmity), 153 (Assertion prejudicial to national integration) (promoting enmity, Hatred between different communities, 505 (spreading rumours) IPC and Section 13 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, in Delhi’s Patiala House court...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Former JNU scholar Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the conspiracy behind the Delhi riots, has tested positive for Covid-19, his legal team said on Tuesday. As per the conversation between Imam, who is in a jail in Guwahati, and his lawyers, he tested positive on Monday, a member of Imam’s legal team told IANS over phone. “I am unwell, weak and also feeling shortness of breath and weakness; I would like to bring it to the attention of the authorities to shift me and other inmates to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital so that we would be provided with proper medical and health facilities,” Imam told his legal team. Imam is currently lodged in a jail in Guwahati in connection with a case relating to an alleged inflammatory speech given by him during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). A member of his legal team informed that during the interview, Imam has stated that the Guwahati Central Jail is overcrowded and social distancing norms are also not being complied with. Imam’s legal team alleged that the authorities had earlier decided that inmates will be treated inside the jail premises and therefore, a makeshift hospital was set up. “But medical facilities are not being provided and there has been no medicine or oxygen,” the lawyer said. Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court dismissed his petition challenging a trial court’s order granting more time to complete the probe against him and also seeking default bail in a case pertaining to giving an inflammatory speech during the anti-CAA protests...

Jamia Violence: Supplementary chargesheet against Sharjeel Imam

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Delhi Police has filed a supplementary charge sheet against Sharjeel Imam in connection with a case relating to the violence that broke out in the national capital’s Jamia Milia Islamia in December last year. The charge sheet was filed before Metropolitan Magistrate of the Saket Court. Speaking to IANS over the phone, Sharjeel’s counsel Ibrahim said: “This is absolutely absurd. They are trying to link him with some Islamist organization without naming it.” Imam was arrested for instigating and abetting the Jamia riots, due to his seditious speech delivered on 13.12.19. During investigation, on the basis of evidences collected, Sections 124 A IPC and 153 A IPC ( Sedition and promoting enmity between classes) were invoked in the case. “On 15.12.19, serious riots had broken out in consequence to the protest march organised by Jamia students against CAA (the Citizenship Amendment Act) in the area of PS New Friends Colony and Jamia. The mob indulged in large scale rioting, stone pelting and arson, and in the process destroyed many public and private properties. Cases of rioting, arson and damage to public properties were registered in both the police stations. Many policemen and public persons were injured in the riots,” the Delhi Police said in a statement...
