Three lawyers quit as Andhra government pleaders

Amaravati, (Samajweekly) Three lawyers resigned as Andhra Pradesh government pleaders in the state High Court on Thursday and their replacements were also announced. Penumaka Venkat Rao, Gaddam Satish Babu and Habeen Sheik submitted their resignations. It was not clear if they resigned on their own or the government asked them to put in their papers. Their resignations came in the wake of a series of setbacks faced by the Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy state government in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. There has been criticism of the legal team of the government for failing to effectively defend the government’s action on various issues. Meanwhile, the government appointed Sumathi, Vaddiboyana Sujatha and Kiran Tirumalasetti as the new government pleaders in the high court. The World Health Organization (WHO) assessed 55 healthcare facilities in the city and found that half of them were “non-functional”, the BBC reported. Three major hospitals had to close and three more had to reduce their capacity following the blast. The WHO also warned that in some facilities Covid-19 prevention measures were not being adhered to. More than 200 people died and more than 6,000 were injured in the blast, according to the city’s governor Marwan Abboud. The explosion was caused by more than 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely at the city’s port. On Tuesday, people in Beirut marked the moment the blast hit exactly a week earlier. There has been outrage that so much explosive material was allowed to be stored in the port. The government resigned on Monday following angry street protests. Dr Richard Brennan, the WHO’s regional emergency director in the Eastern Mediterranean, said that they had assessed 55 primary healthcare clinics in Beirut. Of those, just over half were found to be “non functional”, leaving Beirut short of 500 hospital beds as it continues to deal with thousands of injured residents...

Suman was said to be one of the closest bureaucrats to Nitish Kumar. The Gujarat cadre senior IAS officer was appointed in Bihar after a special request by the ruling party. He held various top posts in the Bihar government, including that of the principal secretary in the state secretariat. Suman resigned from the post of Commissioner, Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) on August 3, 2019, after the state government held him responsible for last year’s flood in the capital city that flashed scenes of top ministers, including Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi marooned by rising waters. “I resigned from the post on August 3 last year, while the flood happened in the city a month later. The state government held me responsible for the choked drainage system leading to the flood,” Suman said. A year after his resignation, Suman attacked Nitish Kumar for the pathetic condition of the PMC. “The officers of the PMC do not have power to take decisions. Hence, no one wants posting in this department,” Suman added.
