Kolkata, The stand-offs between West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Trinamool Congress continued to echo in the Assembly as the TMC legislators held protests in the premises decrying Raj Bhavan’s delay in clearing vital legislations. While the TMC lawmakers accused Dhankhar of holding back crucial Bills, the Governor dismissed the protests as ‘dirty politics’. The slogan-shouting MLAs gathered near the B.R. Ambedkar’s statue in the Assembly premises holding placards denouncing the Governor for stalling passage of key legislations, particularly the West Bengal State Commission for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Bill, 2019. They said important Bills could not be tabled in the House with Dhankhar refusing to give the nod. Meanwhile, the Governor sent a communication to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee under Article 338 and 338A of the Constitution arguing that the field (of the Bill) has been occupied by the National Commission for Scheduled Caste and National Commission for Schedule Tribe. In the six-page communication, Dhankhar said he always accorded the highest priority to legislative work, but the officials were yet to respond to certain questions he had raised about the Bill...

Bengaluru, (Samajweekly) About 50 suspects were detained for allegedly assaulting healthcare workers and damaging public property in the city’s south-west suburb on Sunday night, police said on Monday. “We have detained about 50 people suspected to have attacked healthcare workers and vandalised public property in Padarayanapura area when secondary contacts of Covid-hit patients were told to get quarantined,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ramesh Bhanot told IANS. The city civic body sealed off the area last week after 3 Covid positive cases were identified residing there with travel history to Tablighi Jamaat event in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin in March. “Security has been beefed up with additional deployment of our personnel and the situation is under control. Cases have been booked against the suspects and investigation is underway to find who all instigated the attack and are involved in damaging public property,” Bhanot said. Trouble reportedly began when the secondary contact persons refused to meet the health workers on Sunday evening and stay at the quarantine centre for isolation. “A mob attacked a make-shift tent in the area set up for the health workers and the police personnel who were posted there to prevent the people from coming out of houses and roaming around. They removed the barricade and damaged tables and chairs,” added Bhanot...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Panaji, Not a single individual belonging to the upper caste helped Lord Ram when he was banished from Ayodhya, as well as in his battle against Ravana for the return of Sita, Goa Governor Satya Pal Malik has said in his first official speech here, adding that only tribals, adivasis and lower caste people supported the Lord during his banishment. “There are discussions across the country about building a grand temple in Ayodhya. A grand Ram temple will be built. Everyday, I listen to speeches of highly ranked mahants and saints. When they speak about their vision of the temple, they only speak about Ram lalla’s statue and the Ram durbar,” Malik said in his speech at the 2nd Adivasi Students’ Conference held in Ponda town in South Goa district on Thursday, located 35 km from Panaji. This was Malik’s first public speech since he took charge as Goa Governor on November 3. “No one speaks about an idol of Kewat and Shabari. When Ram’s spouse, Mother Sita was kidnapped, Ram’s brother was the king of Ayodhya. Not a single soldier, not one person came from Ayodhya came to his (Ram) aid. When he (Ram) walked all the way to Sri Lanka, all along the way there were only adivasis, tribals, only people from lower castes. Can anyone tell me whether anyone from higher caste fought along with him?” he said...

London, (Samajweekly) UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that a cross-government commission will be launched to check how discrimination in the education, health and criminal justice systems has affected the black and minority ethnic groups in the country. “We’re going to have a big, big effort, which we will be announcing very shortly: a new cross-government commission to look at what is going on for black and minority ethnic groups and to champion their success,” Xinhua news agency quoted Johnson as saying on Sunday. The move is aimed at ending racial discrimination and injustice in the country, as well as providing more opportunities to black and ethnic minority students going to university, which has been “slightly lost”, according to the Prime Minister. “What I really want to do as Prime Minister is change the narrative, so we stop the sense of victimisation and discrimination… We stop the discrimination, we stamp out racism and we start to have a real sense of expectation of success, that’s where I want to get to,” he said, adding: “But it won’t be easy.” Johnson’s remarks come amid a series of anti-racism demonstrations across the UK, sparked by the May 25death of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man in police custody. More than 100 people were arrested during Saturday’s protests in London, which turned violent later and left six police officers injured, according to Scotland Yard. It came after around 200 people breached the 5 p.m. curfew with most congregating around the statue of Churchill in Parliament Square in central London on Saturday. Police later blocked off two pedestrian bridges between Embankment and Waterloo as Black Lives Matter protesters had been on them attempting to get north in the capital...
