New Delhi/Kolkata, (Samajweekly) Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution, Raosaheb Patil Danve, has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to facilitate the implementation of the Consumer Protection Act in the state. Danve said on Sunday that the Consumer Protection Act 2019 would be a vital tool in protecting consumer rights, as it provides for simplifying the consumer dispute adjudication process. He was speaking in a webinar organised by the Press Information Bureau, Kolkata. Danve said that with the passage of the Consumer Protection Act in the Indian Parliament and a notification by the Central government, the Act has come into force from July 20. Now it is the collective responsibility of the Centre and the state to ensure that the Act is enforced in an appropriate manner, he said. Danve urged the West Bengal government and its Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to facilitate the implementation of the Act in the state. Speaking on the occasion, G.C. Rout, an official of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, said that advantages are multi-dimensional for the stakeholders in the value chain with emphasis on the consumers. The Act has the additional advantage of providing protection to the buyers, not only from traditional sellers but also from the e-commerce retailers/platforms, he added...

Kolkata, The stand-offs between West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Trinamool Congress continued to echo in the Assembly as the TMC legislators held protests in the premises decrying Raj Bhavan’s delay in clearing vital legislations. While the TMC lawmakers accused Dhankhar of holding back crucial Bills, the Governor dismissed the protests as ‘dirty politics’. The slogan-shouting MLAs gathered near the B.R. Ambedkar’s statue in the Assembly premises holding placards denouncing the Governor for stalling passage of key legislations, particularly the West Bengal State Commission for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Bill, 2019. They said important Bills could not be tabled in the House with Dhankhar refusing to give the nod. Meanwhile, the Governor sent a communication to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee under Article 338 and 338A of the Constitution arguing that the field (of the Bill) has been occupied by the National Commission for Scheduled Caste and National Commission for Schedule Tribe. In the six-page communication, Dhankhar said he always accorded the highest priority to legislative work, but the officials were yet to respond to certain questions he had raised about the Bill...

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Congress leader P. Chidambaram has cautioned the government on raising taxes as he said that when business is halted then this should not be done and instead the government should borrow to meet the deficit. Former Finance Minister Chidambaram said “New or higher taxes are justified only when the economy is booming. Tax burdens on the middle class and poor is actually taxing distress.” The Congress leader said that government should give money into the hands of the people. “Governments should give money to the people in times of distress, not squeeze and take money from the people,” tweeted Chidambaram. The Congress has been demanding cash transfers from the government to poor families. “Instead governments are doing a Reverse Transfer of money from the people to the government! Cruel. New or higher taxes will impoverish families further,” he said. He suggested that governments must borrow to meet their deficits, not impose higher tax burdens when economic activity has ground to a halt. The party has suggested that “One way of doing it is the direct transfer scheme something called NYAY which the UPA had proposed in its manifesto. Unless you create liquidity in the hands of the people it is not possible to fix the demand side.” While in an interaction with Rahul Gandhi noted economist and Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee suggested a need for a stimulus package...

Kolkata, Industrialists and officials from India and 35 other countries would take part in the two-day Bengal Business Conclave beginning Wednesday in the sea resort of Digha as the Mamata Banerjee led government in the state is making a desperate bid to rope in big ticket investment which has eluded the West Bengal for years. With the state slated to hold Assembly elections in 2021, the pressure on the Trinamool Congress government is immense to draw investors for much-needed job creation in a state known for its high unemployment rate and flight of capital through the decades. The US, the UK, Poland, France, Czechoslovakia, Australia, China and Bangladesh are among the nations from where delegates are slated to take part in the conclave, where a number of MOUs are expected to be signed. The convention would be inaugurated at 2 p.m. on Wednesday by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the newly-built Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. A large number of business to business and business to government meetings are lined up on day two before the concluding session deliberates on the sectoral opportunities in the state...

Kolkata, The continuing friction between West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee government and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar intensified on Thursday with the Centre deploying the CRPF to provide him ‘Z’ category security cover, a decision the ruling Trinamool Congress called “unprecedented”. A person under the Z category security cover is assigned 22 personnel. The decision apparently stemmed from the situation Dhankhar faced last month at the Jadavpur University where he had gone to “rescue” Union Minister Babul Supriyo who was heckled by a section of students in the campus. Dhankhar was stranded for close to an hour in the campus as the radical Left protesters held a sit-in demonstration and even lay prostrate before his vehicle. It is learnt that following the incident, Raj Bhavan had intimated to the state administration the need to review the Governor’s security. Sources said the Union Home Ministry has informed the state administration of its decision. From now on, the central forces will be deployed in the security ring around Dhankhar...

Kolkata, (Samajweekly) Targeting the state assembly polls that is scheduled to be held within a year if not postponed by Covid-19 pandemic, West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress on Friday geared up with its virtual reach out drive to connect with party cadres across the state. Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee is slated to hold a meeting with all her party MLAs, MPs, district presidents and other leaders through video conferencing this evening to prepare the party’s campaign blueprint ahead of the 2021 elections. The high-level meeting was called by Banerjee in the wake of Corona crisis and the subsequent ‘new normal’ that have changed the whole equation of social gathering across the globe. Party sources said that Trinamool chief would chalk out a thorough campaign policy to virtually connect with all the voters across the state ahead of the upcoming polls, as holding meetings, taking out rallies would be strictly prohibited considering the post Covid-19 situation. Sources further informed that the party is going to focus big on its social media tools to reach out to the masses. Grassroots workers would also be given trainings to conduct virtual campaigns, using various technologies, to connect with voters in the districts. The meeting by the Trinamool supremo was called in the wake of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s virtual BJP rally scheduled on June 7 in Bihar during which Shah would be addressing party workers live-streamed at 60,000 booths via the Internet. Organising regular political rallies virtually came to a halt owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is set to be resumed now for political parties with the help of digital technology...

Kolkata, Describing as “unconstitutional” the West Bengal government’s television advertisement saying the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will not be implemented in the state, governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday appealed to chief minister Mamata Banerjee to withdraw the campaign. Speaking to reporters at the Raj Bhavan here, Dhankhar wondered how the head of a government could openly say her government would not implement a law passed by parliament and assented to by the president of India. He also questioned how the government could use public money to rail against the law of the land. In the advertisements, Banerjee was heard saying the CAA would not be enforced in the state. “How can an elected head of a government use public money to give advertisement in national media that there will be no NRC, no CAB in state? This advertisement is unconstitutional,” he said. The governor said as the constitutional head of the state he had very “gracefully” drawn Banerjee’s attention to the issue, and urged her to withdraw it. “I am sure you all will agree that public money can’t be used to lead an agitation against law of the land…..

Kolkata, Losses caused by cyclone Bulbul in West Bengal could climb to Rs 50,000 crore, with 15 lakh hectares of agricultural land damaged by the calamity on Saturday night, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday after making an aerial survey of the affected areas of North 24 Parganas district. “The cyclone has caused massive destruction. By massive, I mean really massive. People sitting in the comforts of Kolkata and other areas of the state will not be able to gauge the massiveness of the destruction. If I am not wrong, there has been a loss of Rs 50,000 crore. “A total of 15 lakh hectares of agricultural land has been damaged, ruining the entire paddy cultivation. The state government will extend all help to the farmers,” Banerjee said after an administrative meeting in Basirhat. She said a special package would soon be announced for the affected farmers...
