WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Gandhinagar, (Samajweekly) Gujarat detected 1,110 coronavirus positive cases on Sunday, the highest daily spike so far, which took the total positive cases to 55,822 and saw 21 casualties in the last 24 hours, health department said. While 753 patients were discharged on Sunday, taking the total number of discharged patients to 40,365. Gujarat witnessed over 23,000 positive cases detected in the twenty six days of July, almost each day with a new record. On Sunday, the state saw 1,110 positive cases, the highest daily spike on a single day in four months, from 21,708 tests during the past 24 hours, the highest total tests carried out on a single day so far. Surat, the new hotspot is also witnessing each day with a higher count, registering nearly 27 per cent of Sunday’s positive cases. The diamond city recorded 299 cases on Sunday, while Ahmedabad saw 163 cases. Ahmedabad was followed by Vadodara (92), Rajkot (72), Amreli (39), Bhavnagar (31), Banaskantha (30), Narmada (26), Surendranagar (24), Chhota Udepur and Patan (22 each), Junagadh and Kutch (20 each), Gandhinagar and Bharuch (19 each), Gir-Somnath, Mahesana, Navsari and Panchmahals (18 each), Valsad (15), Sabarkantha (14), Anand (11), Morbi (10), Kheda and Tapi (9 each), Dang (6), Botad (5), Devbhumi Dwarka (4), Aravalli and Mahisagar (3 each) and Porbandar with two positive cases...

Cyclone ‘Nisarga’: Storm activity intensifies in Arabian Sea

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. “Nisarga” currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa’s capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, ‘Nisarga’ will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. “The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone,” Vineet Kumar said...

Gujarat tightens screening at airports over corona scare

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmail Gandhinagar, Acting on the Centre’s instructions, the Gujarat government, with the help of Airport Authority of India (AAI) has set up special screening desks at the Ahmedabad and Surat international airports for the passengers arriving from abroad, in a move to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state. “Basically we are placing thermal scanners to check the arriving passengers from abroad. Besides, we will be screening the arriving passengers through the screening teams comprising medical and paramedical staff,” Jayanti Ravi, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, Gujarat told IANS. “We are carrying out the the entire procedure by coordinating with every agency, like the AAI, the central government, the state government and also the municipal corporations of both the cities. We have even imparted special training to them regarding the virus scare,” added Ravi. According to sources, special desks have been set up at the arrival lounge at the Ahmedabad international airport by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to screen the arriving international passengers. The passengers are also asked to give a declaration by filling a a form, which requires them to fill in their health status and that they are free of any disease or ailment. Apart from that, special awareness campaigns, using flash boards at various places at the Ahmedabad airport have been placed depicting the cause and concern regarding the COVID-19 outbreak...

Gandhinagar, Of the nearly 72,000 children admitted to the Sick Newborn Care (SNC) units of government hospitals across Gujarat, over 15,000 died in 2 years, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government claims to be a leading state on all fronts. In reply to questions by Congress MLAs about total children born in government hospitals, Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Nitin Patel said 106,000 infants were born in government hospitals in major cities of the state in 2018 and 2019. Of this, 71,774 infants were admitted to SNC units. During the period, 15,013 infants died during treatment, which is almost 21 per cent of the admitted children. The maximum number of deaths (4,322) was reported from Ahmedabad. Of the 12,637 infants admitted, 34.2 per cent died. In Vadodara, of the 6,576 infants admitted in SNC units, 2,362 infants died (35.91 per cent). In Surat, of the 9,667 infants admitted in SNC units, 1,986 infants died (20.5 per cent). Patel said the government was taking steps to curb infants deaths during treatment. The steps included priority to appointment of pediatricians and medical officers, and imparting special training to doctors and nursing staff, as well as maintaining adequate stock of equipment and other essential items at these units...
