Trust to open bank accounts, seek donations for Ayodhya mosque

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Ayodhya, (Samajweekly) The Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF), the trust constituted by the Sunni Waqf Board for the construction of a mosque in Ayodhya, is inviting donations and will open two bank accounts for the purpose. The trust will also set up a website with an inbuilt gateway to receive donations online. “The Trust has decided to open accounts in two private sector banks for receiving donations. Both will be current accounts. Complying with the Supreme Court’s verdict, the Trust will construct a mosque, a hospital, community kitchen, and a library on the 5-acre land allotted to the Waqf Board at Dhannipur village in Ayodhya district,” said Trust Secretary Athar Hussain. A financial officer too has been appointed for audit and keep the records of funds received, he said. “… even non-Muslims are welcome to donate. We are already receiving calls from those willing to donate for the proposed mosque and other public facilities.” The Trust was formed with nine members on board, with six more to be added soon...

Teachers lack confidence in teaching about Islam

Many teachers, including RE specialists, lack confidence when it comes to teaching about Islam, research by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) has revealed. To help address the issue and improve the understanding and representation of Islam and Muslims, RE Today has created a new cross-phase teaching resource: Picturing Islam, Picturing Muslims. According to an online poll conducted in May 2020, 25 percent of primary and secondary teachers said they were ‘not very confident’, ‘not confident at all, or ‘not sure’ when asked about their views on teaching about Islam. The poll echoes a 2018 survey of primary teachers, which found that only 52 percent felt confident teaching about Islam, compared with 95 percent who were assured about teaching Christianity. The studies also reflect a lack of understanding about Islam in wider society. A report by Ipsos Mori in 2018 reported that 57 percent of the British public did not feel that they had much knowledge or understanding of Islam, and that misconceptions are often widespread. At its conference last year, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers raised concerns about parents withdrawing their children from lessons on Islam. RE Today’s new teaching resource ‘Picturing Islam, Picturing Muslims’ features 24 picture cards and 72 learning activities and lesson ideas, connecting central Muslim concepts and ways of living. Created by RE subject experts, it explores both British and global Islam, and includes well-known Muslims who are in the public eye, such as footballer Mo Salah; Mayor of London, Sadiq Kahn; and chef author and TV presenter, Nadiya Hussain MBE...

Army starts investigation in Shopian encounter case

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Army has started investigation in the July 18 encounter in South Kashmir’s Shopian in which three suspected militants were killed. The three killed have been reportedly identified as missing labourers from Rajouri in Jammu on the basis of photographs released by the families. In a statement army said, “We have noted social media inputs linked to the operation at Shopian on 18 Jul 2020. The three terrorists killed during the operation have not been identified and the bodies were buried based on established protocols. Army is investigating the matter.” Meanwhile the incident has drawn sharp response from Kashmir based politicians. Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) president Altaf Bukhari Monday sought an impartial and time bound probe to unearth the mystery behind the disappearance of three labourers of Rajouri district. In a statement issued Bukhari urged the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to order a high level probe into the disappearance of three labourers–Imtiaz Ahmed, son of Sagar Hussain, Ibrar Ahmed, son of Bagha Khan and Ibrar Ahmed son of Mohammad Yousuf whose whereabouts are unknown since July 17. “The Lt. Governor led government in J&K is expected to order and pursue a serious, impartial and transparent investigation that leaves no stone unturned in finding out what happened to these three poor labourers who have lost contact with their families since July 17. The truth behind their missing must be unearthed as quickly as possible,” he remarked...

Special Cell sources said that it grilled two railway men, who had met the Pakistan High Commission staffers, who were pretending to be Indians, outside the Northern Railway headquarters at Baroda House. A source further disclosed that Abid Hussain, posed as Gautam, brother of a media person, to establish contact with the two railway employees and tried to get the details of the movement of the Indian Army through the railways. The source said that Hussain, to gain confidence of the railways employees, pretended that he needed information about rail movements for his brother who was supposedly doing a story on the Indian Railways and that he was also willing to pay. The spies also asked them where the coaches for armed forces are provided in trains and how to get a job in railways, the source added. However, the railway men, feeling suspicious, didn’t reveal any information to them. On Sunday, intelligence agencies caught Hussain and Mohammad Tahir for spying on the Indian Army. The duo used to meet Indian defence personnel as “businessmen” to get information for decoy news reporters. Both were declared persona non grata and have been expelled from India...
