New Delhi, (Samajweekly) India’s novel Coronavirus tally crossed the 23-lakh mark on Wednesday with detection of 60,963 new cases in the last 24 hours, while 834 more fatalities took the death toll to 46,091, the Health Ministry said. Out of the total 2,329,638 cases, recoveries surged to 1,639,599 as a record 56,110 more patients recovered during the period. The recovery rate is nearly 70 per cent now. The active cases in the country currently total 6,43,948. Notably, the fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die of the disease among individuals diagnosed, has dropped to about two per cent, the Ministry said. The country had touched the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and added more than 3,00,000 cases in less than five days. The silver lining, however, is that the gap between recoveries and active cases is growing every day. Currently, recoveries are 10 lakh more than the active cases. As many as 7,33,449 samples were tested on Tuesday, taking the total to 2,60,15,297 samples till date, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research. Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with a total of 5,24,513 cases and 18,050 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 302,815 cases and 5041 deaths. The southern state is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with Chief Ministers and representatives of 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh for a review meeting. He mentioned that almost 80 per cent of the active cases are from the participating 10 states, and if the virus is defeated in these states, the entire country will emerge victorious in the battle against COVID-19...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Tuesday brought some relief for India in terms of new cases of coronavirus reported in the last 24 hours, as after three days, the number of new cases has shown a downward trend. As per the data updated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday evening, the total tally of confirmed coronavirus cases in India so far stood at 4,789, including 4,312 active cases and 124 deaths, while 352 people have recovered and been discharged from hospital, and one individual migrated. People affected by COVID-19 in India include 70 foreign nationals.According to Joint Health Secretary Lav Agarwal, a total of 354 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours on Tuesday. On Monday the highest number of new cases in 24 hours was reported at 693. Within hours after the decision by the state cabinet to allow retail sale of liquor, more than 2,000 Aoutlets re-opened in all 33 districts across the state at 10 a.m. The government has allowed re-opening of liquor shops in all districts including the red zone. However, those in the containment zones will not be allowed to open. The state has 2216 liquor shops and of them 15 of them located in containment zones have not been re-opened. The government’s decision to hike the liquor prices by 16 per cent failed to dampen the spirit of the liquor lovers, who started queuing up two-three hours before the shops re-opened. The price of acheap liquor’ has been enhanced by 11 per cent. There was some delay in beginning the sale as the revised prices were not updated at a few places. “I spent a sleepless since I heard the announcement last night. When I arrived here some people were already standing in the queue. I thank the chief minister for allowing the sale of liquor,” said a man standing in the queue at Bagga Wines at Koti in Hyderabad. Hyderabad, (Samajweekly) In the biggest-ever spike, Telangana reported 199 coronavirus cases while five more people succumbed to the deadly virus, pushing the death toll to 82. Heath officials said 196 people in the local population of Telangana tested positive during 24 hours ending 5 p.m. on Sunday. Three migrants also found infected. This is the highest single-day jump since the state reported first case on March 2. A day after health officials termed the rise in number of cases a natural phenomenon consequent to the easing of lockdown and warned of another surge, the state witnessed the massive surge. The state’s tally of cases mounted to 2,698, with 1,188 patients under treatment in hospitals. Officials said 122 people tested positive in Greater Hyderabad alone. This is also the highest single-day number for the state capital, the worst affected among 33 districts. As many as 40 cases were reported from Ranga Reddy district and 10 from Medchal. Both the districts are adjacent to Greater Hyderabad. Indicating the spread of Covid-19, the cases were reported from 12 districts. Two districts which had not reported a single case since the outbreak of Covid-19 joined the list of affected districts. With this the state has lost all three districts in the category during last two days. Three migrants also tested positive on Sunday, taking the total number of affected migrants to 192. New Delhi, There are at least 25 positive cases of COVID-19 in India at present, the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan informed on Wednesday during a press conference here. “There are at least 28 confirmed cases of the coronavirus that have been reported so far in India. Out of which three patients, who were earlier infected in Kerala, have been cured from the disease,” said the minister. Hyderabad, The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) employees’ strike continued for the 46th day on Tuesday as their leaders postponed the decision on it. Various employees’ unions held separate meetings here to discuss the course of action as the Telangana High Court directed the Labour Commissioner to take a decision on the strike in two weeks. The unions authorised their apex body, Joint Action Committee (JAC), to decide on the continuance of strike. JAC convenor Ashwathama Reddy said the decision would be taken after the HC judgment on a petition challenging the government move to privatise 5,100 TSRTC routes. During the hearing on the main petitions relating to the strike on Monday, the AJAC counsel had submitted that employees were ready to resume work, but sought direction to the government and the TSRTC to take back all employees and not to take any action against them...

Hyderabad, (Samajweekly) The death toll due to Covid-19 in Telangana crossed 100 with six more persons succumbing to the deadly virus, officials said on Thursday. Six deaths during the last 24 hours ending Thursday 5 p.m. pushed the death toll to 105. With this, Telangana became the ninth state in India to record more than 100 deaths due to Covid-19. The state has been witnessing a surge in both fatalities and new positive cases for nearly three weeks. Thursday saw another spike in number of cases with as many as 127 people testing positive for the deadly virus. This pushed the state’s tally to 3,147. Telangana became 12th state to cross 3,000 cases on Wednesday. The tally includes 448 migrants, deportees and foreign returnees. However, all the cases reported during last 24 hours were local. There was no let up in new cases in Greater Hyderabad as it accounted for 110 of the fresh infections. Seven cases were reported from Adilabad and six from Ranga Reddy. Officials said the number of patients undergoing treatment in hospitals stands at 1455. So far 1,587 people have been discharged. Meanwhile, the government-run Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad reported four more Covid-19 cases among its healthcare staff.
