Congress expresses concern over child labour

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Congress on Friday launched an awareness programme on the occasion of World Day against Child Labour, expressing concern over what it said was the trivial approach of the authorities in curtailing child labour menace. Ahmed Patel, Congress Treasurer and Rajya Sabha member, tweeted: “Imagine the prowess of human capital, if the children bound by the shackles of child labour are set free and allowed to prosper as respectable human beings! And like everything else, this change begins with our surroundings.” Congress national spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also urged people not to encourage child labour. “Those tender hands at the repair shop hold the potential to change the destiny of a nation. Let us not chain them in the limitations of child labour,” Surjewala said in his message on Facebook. Even former Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari asserted that governments need to do more to eradicate child labour. “The next time you stop at a dhaba and see a ‘Chotu’ scurrying to fetch you tea, realise that a little child is putting his childhood at stake to earn a livelihood- And needs your voice to help eradicate child labour and have a fair shot at life,” Tewari tweeted. Party leadership from various states, including Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla, former Himachal Cabinet Minister Asha Kumari, Haryana Minister Harish Chaudhary, Chhattisgarh Minister T.S. Maharashtra Covid-19 deaths cross 700, cases zoom over 19K

Mumbai, (Samajweekly) Maharashtra reported 37 more Covid-19 deaths on Friday, taking the total toll beyond 700, even as the number of cases continued to march upwards, crossing 19,000. With 37 fatalities, the state death toll shot up to 731 and the total number of coronavirus patients increased from to 19,063 with a jump of 1,089. Of the total deaths, 25 were recorded in Mumbai – taking the city toll to 462 and the number of Covid-19 positive patients in the city shot up by 748 to 12,142. Besides Mumbai’s 25 deaths, Pune recorded 10 fresh fatalities, while one death each was reported from Amravati and Jalgaon. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ruled out deploying the Indian Army to control crowds in Mumbai but hinted at lockdown extension since the ‘virus chain’ had not broken as indiscipline among the people continued. As Mumbai continued to be the worst Covid-19 hotspot in India, the state government acted tough by shunting out BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi and replacing him with another senior IAS officer Iqbal Singh Chahal. India’s limited-overs vice captain Rohit Sharma did the same on the occasion of Chahal’s 30th birthday. “Many happy returns to India’s greatest national treasure #GOAT @yuzi_chahal,” Rohit tweeted with a rare photo of the pair from the days when Chahal was part of the Mumbai Indians. Chahal was signed up by Mumbai Indians in 2011 and while he played all games of the 2011 Champions League T20, he played for the team once in the Indian Premier League across three seasons. Indian captain Virat Kohli also posted a photo of Chahal in his IPL colours. The pair share the dressing room for Royal Challengers Bangalore. “Happy b’day Yuzi. God bless you. Punjab sets up panel on breaking nexus in illicit liquor trade

WhatsAppFacebookTwitterTelegramEmailPrint Chandigarh, (Samajweekly) A day after he announced a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to probe the trade in illicit liquor, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday said an Excise Reforms Group had been set up to break the nexus between producers, wholesalers and retailers of illicit liquor. The five-member group has been asked to submit its recommendations on breaking the nexus within 60 days, which would then pave the way for the elimination of illicit liquor trade in Punjab and maximisation of the state’s excise revenue, according to an official spokesperson. The group comprises Housing and Urban Development Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Public Works Minister Vijay Inder Singla, in addition to retired IAS officer D.S. Kalha, Adviser Financial Resources V.K. Garg and School Education Secretary Krishan Kumar. Working in tandem with the SIT, which has been tasked with investigation into all aspects of illicit liquor trade in the state, including complicity of Excise Department officials, the group will identify the gaps leading to revenue losses for the state due to such complicity. The Chief Minister has mandated the group to come up with its suggestions on long-term legal and administrative reforms, after due diligence and consultations with the stakeholders. In this process, the reforms group may consider the suggestions and reports received earlier from the state Finance Minister on his visit to West Bengal and also from the previous Local Government Minister...

4 killed, 15 rescued as 2 buildings collapse in Mumbai

Mumbai, (Samajweekly) At least 4 persons were killed and 15 others rescued with a few others believed to be trapped as two buildings collapsed in separate incidents in the city and suburbs as rains continued to hammer Mumbai for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, the BMC Disaster Cell said. In the first instance, at least two persons were killed and 13 others were dug out of the debris of a 3-storied tenement which crashed due to heavy rains in Plot No 8B, at Malvani in Malad west, with 4-5 people still believed to be buried in the rubble. In the second crash in south Mumbai’s Fort area, the rear portion of a five-storied, 80-year-old dilapidated structure, Bhanushali Building collapsed claiming 2 lives. While several persons were evacuated by the Fire Brigade and 2 others were rescued, at least one person is still feared trapped under the rubble. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad, Mayor Kishori Pednekar, Municipal Commissioner I. S. Chahal, Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and other senior officials rushed to the site and reviewed the relief and rescue operations in south Mumbai. The victims of the Malad crash have been identified as a 23-year old woman Anjum S. Shaikh, and an 18-year old youth Faizal W. Sayyed. The 13 others rescued from the Malad crash were treated for minor injuries and discharged from Hayat Hospital nearby...
