Exoplanet that vanished from sight likely never existed

Washington, (Samajweekly) What astronomers thought was a planet beyond our solar system has now seemingly vanished from sight, suggesting that the exoplanet likely never existed. The object, called Fomalhaut b, was first announced in 2008, based on observations made by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope in 2004 and 2006. It was clearly visible in several years of Hubble observations that revealed it was a moving dot. But data analysis of Hubble images taken in 2014 showed the object had vanished. A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggests that the Hubble was instead looking at an expanding cloud of very fine dust particles from two icy bodies that smashed into each other. Hubble came along too late to witness the suspected collision but may have captured its aftermath, said the study. The missing-in-action planet was last seen orbiting the star Fomalhaut, 25 light years away. “These collisions are exceedingly rare and so this is a big deal that we actually get to see evidence of one,” said Andras Gaspar, an assistant astronomer at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory and lead author of a research paper announcing the discovery...

Bike ambulance to cover entire Delhi: CM

ew Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said his government plans to expand the bike ambulance services to the entire city as he claimed that the pilot with 16 bikes was successful. To provide the last-mile emergency healthcare services to the people of Delhi living in the narrow lanes, the government launched the bike ambulance service in February. Kejriwal said his government has decided to expand the service to cover all of Delhi. “I am happy that patients living in the narrow lanes are also getting the health facilities through bike ambulances. Over 100 rioters have been arrested, said the police on Wednesday. Around 60 police personnel have sustained injuries in the violent incidents of stone pelting and attacks by rioters that erupted on Tuesday evening. Police had to resort to firing in order to bring the situation under control. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the city while curfew was clamped in the D.J. Halli and K.G. Halli police station limits. On Tuesday, the two police stations were targets of the violence. City Commissioner of Police Kamal Pant said that 110 rioters have been arrested in connection with the violence. He also tweeted that the nephew of local MLA, accused of circulating an offensive Facebook post, has been arrested. Police officials said that protestors had rained bottles at a police van transporting police personnel to the affected area. Property of the Congress Legislator from Pulakeshi Nagar constituency was attacked and vandalised while several police vehicles were damaged in the violence unleashed by the irate mob on Tuesday...

Para commandos begin final assault on holed up terrorists in J&K

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) Security forces including para commandos started the ‘first light intervention’ on Sunday to flush out the holed up terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district where a standoff had been going on between the holed up terrorists and the security forces since midnight. “Firing exchanges had stopped around 12 a.m. today and since three army soldiers and two local policemen are also inside the house which the terrorists are using as a fortified bunker, room intervention by the para commandos is being carried out with utmost caution,” a top intelligence officer told IANS. Sources also told IANS that there has been no contact with the security personnel yet who had entered the house to sort out the terrorists without causing any collateral damage to civilian life and property. It must be recalled that an army Colonel, who is the commanding officer of the Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Rajwar area of Handwara tehsil, his company commander, a major, the Colonel’s buddy (soldier guarding the officer) and two policemen including a sub-inspector, who is the incharge of the SOG camp in the area and his guard, a police constable, had risked their lives during the operation when they chose to enter the house to eliminate the hiding terrorists on Saturday. “Without caring for their safety in the true tradition of the Indian army wherein the officers lead our boys from the front, the Colonel and the major entered the house to sort out the hiding terrorists. “Equally bravely did the police officer and his guard join the army officers to ensure that the hiding terrorists are eliminated without any collateral damage,” top sources told IANS...
