Srinagar Mayor faces another challenge to his survival in SMC

Srinagar, (Samajweekly) If Srinagar Mayor, Junaid Azim Mattu, survives the no confidence motion brought against him by his opponents, Mattu would get a second lease of life as the city’s top elected functionary. Mattu had survived a no confidence motion against him on December 26, 2019. Srinagar municipal corporation has 74 members, out of which 27 belong to the BJP and the rest are Independents and those belonging to the National Conference and the Congress. BJP spokesman has confirmed that the party supports the motion against the Mayor indirectly, but the National Conference Vice-President and former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has made it clear that his party has no intention of going along with the BJP. Mattu has asserted that the Congress is also not going to support the no confidence motion against him. The no confidence motion has been filed by former Deputy Mayor, Sheikh Imran, who is an Independent member of the corporation. “We will fight this democratically and legally as this is yet another litmus test for the mainstream. And you know, that will be challenging,” Powell made the remarks in a virtual discussion with former Fed Vice Chairman Alan Blinder, held by the Princeton University, on Friday. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis wins second term

Bucharest, Klaus Iohannis was elected as Romanian President for a second term in the presidential election on Sunday, after he defeated his rival, Social Democrat and former Prime Minister Viorica Dancila. “It’s an important victory, the most categorical victory ever obtained against the Social Democratic Party (PSD),” said Iohannis from the headquarters of the National Liberal Party (PNL), which he heads, just after the exit polls foreshadowed his triumph with more than 66 per cent of the votes. “I accept this victory with joy, with modesty and with confidence in Romania,” Efe news quoted Romania’s President as saying. With 94 per cent of the precincts reporting, Iohannis obtained 62.8 per cent of the vote to Dancila’s 37.1 per cent, according to figures published by the Central Election Office. The president said that he was not “at war with the PSD voters, but rather with the PSD,” a party that has been tainted by corruption allegations but that has dominated the political scene in recent years and has been harshly criticized both within the country and from abroad...

Teachers lack confidence in teaching about Islam

Many teachers, including RE specialists, lack confidence when it comes to teaching about Islam, research by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) has revealed. To help address the issue and improve the understanding and representation of Islam and Muslims, RE Today has created a new cross-phase teaching resource: Picturing Islam, Picturing Muslims. According to an online poll conducted in May 2020, 25 percent of primary and secondary teachers said they were ‘not very confident’, ‘not confident at all, or ‘not sure’ when asked about their views on teaching about Islam. The poll echoes a 2018 survey of primary teachers, which found that only 52 percent felt confident teaching about Islam, compared with 95 percent who were assured about teaching Christianity. The studies also reflect a lack of understanding about Islam in wider society. A report by Ipsos Mori in 2018 reported that 57 percent of the British public did not feel that they had much knowledge or understanding of Islam, and that misconceptions are often widespread. At its conference last year, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers raised concerns about parents withdrawing their children from lessons on Islam.
