Prez expresses concern on air pollution in Delhi

FacebookTwitterTelegramEmail New Delhi, President Ram Nath Kovind has expressed concern over the air pollution in Delhi and neighbouring areas and said that days of smog sometimes give the feeling of doomsday scenario being fast forwarded. “Many scientists and futurologists have painted doomsday scenarios. On days of smog and poor visibility in our cities, we fear the future might already be here,” the President said while speaking at a meeting with IITians and other technical institutes in Rashtrapati Bhavan. “This is that time of the year when the air quality of the national capital as well as of many other cities worsens beyond all norms. We are facing a kind of challenge here that we have never faced before,” he added. The President said that hydrocarbon energy changed the face of the world in the last couple of centuries, but “now it is threatening our very existence”. He added that the challenge is compounded for nations battling to bring substantial sections of populations out of poverty. “Yet, we will have to find alternatives”, he said...

Fresh spurt in corona cases in Bhopal and Indore

In the first four days of June, Bhopal overtook Indore in terms of new cases of corona patients. To Indore’s 147, Bhopal reported 163 coronavirus cases. The figures for the corresponding period last month were Bhopal 55, and Indore 125. Friday’s figures changed the picture with 55 patients testing positive in Indore against Bhopal’s 51. The two major cities have shown that they cannot handle a crisis without enough discipline. Neemuch appeared on the corona map of the state with five cases in the first week of May and recorded a big pike in the past couple of weeks. With 38 cases reported on Friday, Neemuch has logged 290 so far. The state reported 234 fresh cases on Friday just as the administration claimed to have checked the spread of the virus. The health department bulletin issued on Friday reported nearly 150 cases from Indore, Bhopal and Neemuch. The police administration and the health department have some embarrassing questions to answer over the fresh spurt of cases in Indore and Bhopal. The major hotspot in Indore was Khajrana where more than 200 patients were found positive in the past four days. Bhopal has more than a dozen such hotspots, where the number of patients has increased rapidly. This includes Jehangirabad, Aishbagh, Mangalwara, Banganga, Kotra Sultanabad, Qazi Camp, Idgah Hills and other areas. The causes for the rapid rise in numbers in Bhopal are: People not following safe physical distancing, are moving without masks, and lack of sanitation in slums where houses are built above big gutters in narrow lanes with people constantly contacting each other...

Railways ferried 60L people, recovered 15% operational costs

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Indian Railways has ferried over 60 lakh people in 4,450 Shramik Special trains since May 1, but managed to recover only 15 per cent of operational costs, said Railway Board Chairman V.K. Yadav, here on Monday. Speaking to reporters through a video link, Yadav said, “The average fare per person on Shramik Special trains was Rs 600 and we have operated 4,450 Shramik trains so far. The Railways generated a revenue of around Rs 360 crore.” The average fare for Shramik Special trains is Rs 600 per passenger. “One has to keep in mind that these are normal fares and not fares for special trains which are higher. We carried 60 lakh passengers, so the revenue can be calculated. We, however, managed to recover only 15 per cent of cost of operations,” the Chairman said. Yadav reiterated that the cost of operating these trains was being shared by the Centre and the states in a 85-15 per cent ratio. He also said that now very less people are stranded and the Railways along with the state governments will arrange for their return. He further said that the demand for Shramik Special trains had fallen in the last couple of days. Yadav said that he had written to the state governments on June 3 and received requests for 171 Shramik Special trains. “Between June 4 and June 14, we operated 222 Shramik special trains,” he said, and assured the states of providing trains within 24 hours of the request. Before May 25, the Railways was operating over 250 trains to ferry the stranded workers...
