Cal Fire Assistant Deputy Director Daniel Berlant on Sunday said that wildfires have burned more than 3.2 million acres in California, a swath larger than the state of Connecticut, Xinhua news agency reported. About 16,570 firefighters were battling 29 major wildfires statewide Sunday. The federal, state and local resources assigned to active wildfires include more than 2,200 fire engines, 388 water tenders, 304 bulldozers and 104 aircraft, according to Cal Fire. The August Complex in Mendocino and Humboldt counties, the largest fire in state history, grew more than 2,000 acres overnight to 877,477, and is 28 percent contained, Cal Fire officials said on Sunday. So far, 365 structures have been destroyed and 32 damaged, and 14,074 are threatened, according to an incident report of the Creek Fire that is covering 201,908 acres with 8 percent containment. Officials fighting the Creek Fire in Fresno and Madera counties said that forecasted wind gusts of up to 35 mph will continue to move the flames deep into canyons of the Sierra National Forest on Sunday. Washington, (Samajweekly) US President Donald Trump said that America has beaten the coronavirus battle and that the number of those affected was falling, despite the country accounting for the highest number of COVID-19 infections and fatalities in the world. At a press conference on Monday, Trump said his country has saved hundreds of thousands of lives in the fight against COVID-19, reports Efe news. He said the US has accepted the task and the country had lived up to the task. The claim drew comparisons on Twitter to the “mission accomplished” statement proclaimed in May 2003 by then-President George W. Bush, referring to the invasion of Iraq, despite the fact that the war would still last for many more years. The US currently accounts for the world’s highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths at 1,347,388 and 80,397, respectively, according to the Johns Hopkins University. In addition, the University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Assessments, whose projections the White House has drawn heavily on, estimates that the US will have topped 137,000 deaths in early August. Asked about that projection, Trump opined that “many of those models are wrong”, and at the same press conference he stressed that “the numbers are falling a lot throughout the country”, something that does not agree with the data. Although the daily increase in the number of deaths has stabilized and the University of Washington expects that indicator to drop until August, the number of infections continues to rise and this Sunday alone registered 20,000 new cases in the United States...

Washington, (Samajweekly) US President Donald Trump said that Vice President Mike Pence had tested negative for the novel coronavirus again. “The Vice President first of all has been tested and he’s negative and he was tested yesterday, tested today and he is negative,” Xinhua news agency quoted Trump as saying at a White House press conference on Monday. “He’s in very good shape and I think that that’s going to be fine.” Pence is in the White House and not in quarantine, though his press secretary, Katie Miller, tested positive for the coronavirus last week. Besides Miller, a military member who served as one of Trump’s personal valets had also contracted the disease. White House officials working in the West Wing were being asked to wear masks to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to a memo distributed to staffers. Trump, who was not wearing a face mask during Monday’s press conference, said that it was him who made the decision. “If you look at all those people over there, every one of them from what I see, these are White House staffers, they’re White House representatives, they’re White House executives and everybody has a mask on. Just about everybody I’ve seen today has worn a mask,” he said. The President also announced that $11 billion will go to the states for “the sole support of testing”, as they are reopening or planning to reopen. The US currently accounts for the world’s highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths at 1,347,388 and 80,397, respectively, according to the Johns Hopkins University...
