Washington, (Samajweekly) The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 20.5 million, while the deaths have increased to over 747,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University. As of Thursday morning, the total number of cases stood at 20,550,481 and the fatalities rose to 747,845, the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update. The US accounted for the world’s highest number of infections and fatalities at 5,193,266 and 165,934, respectively, according to the CSSE. Brazil came in the second place with 3,164,785 infections and 104,201 deaths. Cape Town, (Samajweekly) South Africa reported 18,37 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily increase since the country confirmed its first case in early March, bringing the total to 29,240, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said. “Regrettably, we report 34 more COVID-19 related deaths — this brings the total national deaths to 611,” Mkhize said in his daily update on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported. So far, the nationwide count of recoveries stood at 15,093, with a recovery rate of 52.4 per cent, he said, adding that a total of 680,175 tests have been conducted, with 24,452 tests done in the past 24 hours. The Western Cape province remains the epicenter in the country with 18,906 cases, followed by Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, each with 3,583 cases, and KwaZulu-Natal with 2,428 cases. Mumbai, (Samajweekly) Maharashtra on Sunday recorded a fresh record high of 53 Covid-19 deaths in a single day – up from Saturday’s 48 – and the number of positive cases shot past 22,000, health officials said here. With 53 fatalities, the death toll shot up to 832 and the total number of coronavirus patients increased to 22,171, with the highest jump of 1,278 cases. Of the total deaths, 19 were recorded in Mumbai, as well as one of a person hailing from Madhya Pradesh – taking the city’s toll to 508 and the number of Covid-19 positive patients in the city shot up by 875 to 13,739, the highest spurt till date. Dharavi slum alone continued to be a major hotspot in Mumbai, notching 26 new cases, taking the total number of patients to 859, and 29 deaths till now. Besides Mumbai, 14 deaths were recorded in Malegaon (Nashik), Pune recorded six, Jalgaon five, Dhule three, and Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Nandurbar, Solapur and Palghar one each.
